Norville Rogers
https://www.rt.com/uk/312365-people-think-jobs-useless/ Do we have a more than average percentage of bullshit jobs on this fair isle? Do we excel in excellence at bullshit? Methinks so. Discuss.
woolley
Oxymoron really innit? But yes. Lots and lots of them. Too many for a small Island to support.

Mr Bear
The problem is that there are so many people and too few jobs that they have to make new ones up that inevitably obstruct the people doing real work. Health and safety is a good example. Fine in sensible proportions, but very obstructive and expensive when there are more"safety officers" than working people on a site. The retarded level of faux safety politics pretty much adds a zero to the cost of any construction work, and makes the lives of construction workers frustrating and stressful as the simplest job becomes a wall of red tape and nonsensical procedures. If you're old enough you may remember a TV program called Tomorrows World where they enthused about how robots would do all the work in the future and we would live a life of leisure. In reality the robots do the work and we have high unemployment. What we actually need is a complete rethink of modern society, where the work is shared amongst everyone with reduced weekly hours and a shorter working life. woolley
@ Big Clive: Spot on. Not just H&S. All manner of non-productive work that just pushes up the price of what finished work still gets done. I include much of the administration, regulation, higher education, documentation, pointless legislation and general jumping through hoops that has to be gone through nowadays. rmanx
Although playing devils advocate here...the level of H&S we currently "enjoy" has only come about because people have sued and measures introduced after the fact. Why do you think the coffee cup says "caution...contents maybe hot"?
woolley
Yes. I remember before 1980 solicitors were prohibited from advertising and I often wondered why. Oh, how I found out later.
spook
The civil service in particular and the public sector in general. As organisations bloat so empires emerge and within those empires 'support' groups grow that inevitably duplicate similar support groups elsewhere. It is these 'bullshit' jobs that are only there because they have grown to support other 'bulshit' jobs that are the cause of the ludicrously huge and disproportionate Manx CS and Public Sector. Bell should have tackled thus joke in bad taste years ago and defiantly when he was put in the role of CM (which was a joke in itself).

If we did not have H&S then the people who died pointless deaths died in vain.
Gee Cee
H&S seem to have failed utterly, when it comes to road racing. 247 competitors dead, and still counting!

That would be a USP for the IOM. With computers doing the work it should take less time and give us more leisure but somehow it never works out that way. Reams and reams of upper management and expensively remunerated posts; not just in Govt. itself but also local authorities. Why do pissing little local "town and village" authorities need "Clerks" on £80k a year? And similar salaried positions beneath? It's neither needed nor justified. Or any longer affordable, IMHO
