The hypocrisy around this issue and specifically the mock concern for the civillians in aleppo is pretty astounding to me
the stinking enigma
Just goes to show that using civillians as human shields can work https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/13/deal-reached-to-evacuate-rebels-and-civilians-from-aleppo
Tarne
Of course it works. We in the West aren't monsters and they constantly use that against us. We are fearful are being seen as Hitlers
mojomonkey
Of course it works. We in the West aren't monsters and they constantly use that against us. We are fearful are being seen as Hitlers For such a short statement that raises so many questions. For starters, who do you define as the West and who are "they"? The Old Git
Anyone care to give a quick summary on how this war started? Had a quick Google this morning and then answer, as I suspected, seems to be religion as usual. Accurate or not?
rmanx
Civil war because of several theories...one being the detention and killing of some children who were arrested for anti-government graffiti or general civil unrest at the way the country was being run. Islamists from outside Syria joined the Rebels (mainly because the Regime is lead by Assad who is an Aluwite (spelling?) and that kind of "moderate" Islam doesn't sit well with them). We (the West) don't like Assad because he is friendly to Iran (the bogeyman of the Middle East), so we trained and armed a load of Rebels thinking they will take him out and become "good guys". Turned out all we did was fund, train and arm a bunch of IS fighters. Russia, who is friendly to Assad, attacks the Rebels, which we don't like because we hate Assad and Russia and we funded the Rebels. We (the West, but mainly the UK and America) get involved even deeper by attacking government forces..."to protect the innocents"...by bombing them, which almost put us at war with Russia because of sabre rattling and talk of shooting down Russia jets. That's the basics.
quilp
But essentially, it's a religious conflict coerced by the dreaded House of Saud. Muslim on Muslim, vying for religious supremacy.
the stinking enigma
With a bit of western opportunism thrown in. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-10-24/oil-gas-war-over-syria-4-maps
The Old Git
Yeah, Wiki seeemed to suggest it started becasue Assad was a non / wrong type of Muslim. Not always sure if you can trust Wikipaedia all of the time though So basicaly religion and tribalism again, and then a proxy war.
rmanx
Not really. Qatar gas and Saudi oil need to go through non aligned Syria. USA backed Saudi led "religious" war only serves to make a resource corridor through Syria. Follow the money...
woolley
Previous assessments are sound. Also the "moderate" rebels were emboldened by the Western interference in Iraq and Libya to think that if they rose up against Assad, the same would happen and they could take advantage. Obama dithered, UK Parliament said "no chance" and that was that. They were left to their own devices pretty much until Putin stepped to save his client regime.
