Civil war because of several theories...one being the detention and killing of some children who were arrested for anti-government graffiti or general civil unrest at the way the country was being run.

Islamists from outside Syria joined the Rebels (mainly because the Regime is lead by Assad who is an Aluwite (spelling?) and that kind of "moderate" Islam doesn't sit well with them).

We (the West) don't like Assad because he is friendly to Iran (the bogeyman of the Middle East), so we trained and armed a load of Rebels thinking they will take him out and become "good guys". Turned out all we did was fund, train and arm a bunch of IS fighters.

Russia, who is friendly to Assad, attacks the Rebels, which we don't like because we hate Assad and Russia and we funded the Rebels.

We (the West, but mainly the UK and America) get involved even deeper by attacking government forces..."to protect the innocents"...by bombing them, which almost put us at war with Russia because of sabre rattling and talk of shooting down Russia jets.

That's the basics.

Previous assessments are sound. Also the "moderate" rebels were emboldened by the Western interference in Iraq and Libya to think that if they rose up against Assad, the same would happen and they could take advantage. Obama dithered, UK Parliament said "no chance" and that was that. They were left to their own devices pretty much until Putin stepped to save his client regime.
