the stinking enigma
The s-300 is a defensive weapon by any way you could choose to define it. Therefore it's a bit puzzling to me how russia supplying syria with them can possibly seen as an escalation? Perhaps one of our resident critical thinkers could explain how a purely defensive weapon can be seen as an escalation? A cogent one on a plate, peeled if at all possible. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.timesofisrael.com/us-warns-russia-deploying-s-300-in-syria-would-be-major-mistake/amp/

TheTeapot
Anyone caught the docu series on bbc2 about Assad? Part two was tonight. It is very interesting obviously, cos the whole situation is. The show itself is weirdly passive/aggressive, managing to show him in a sympathetic way at the same time as calling him a killer. His wife is amazingly posh. I look forward to seeing the next installment.
quilp
Yes, engrossing. Bashar carrying on his father Hafez's legacy over Lebanon with subterfuge and murder. The mafia-like family rivalries. Interesting stuff. Agree about the passive/aggressive presentation and dialogue. Though it was basically very one-sided. Hopefully the last episode will cover Putin's role and Syria's next-door nation of Israel. Will the dynasty last or is it about to come tumbling down around them? Assad still has massive loyalist support. Walid Jumblatt. There's an interesting player right there.
Chinahand
Well, Trump has truly shafted the Kurds, ordering a US withdrawal in the face of a Turkish advance. He’s setting a terrible precedent which will be remembered when allies wonder how reliable the US will be.

Or human shields as we sometimes call them.

quilp
Baghdadi's assassination is not cutting the head off a snake. He'll be revered as the great warrior achieving martyrdom. There'll be a successor, equally villainous and revenge attacks, no doubt. You can't kill an idea.
