"US president Donald Trump has said he expects a 'powerful' trade deal with the UK to be completed, 'very quickly.' Speaking at the G20 summit in Hamburg, he said he would go to London. Asked when, he said, 'we'll work that out.' The US president is holding talks with UK Prime Minister Theresa May to discuss a post-brexit trade deal. It is one of a series of one-to-one meetings with world leaders which will also see Mrs May hold trade talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe." Hm-mm... Surely you don't believe all that leftie nonsense broadcast by the Kremlin mouthpiece that is the BBC...? Trump is first and foremost a businessman - but he clearly loves gesture politics. According to the Maybot "No deal is better than a bad deal" but the fact she spouts nonsense like that, albeit to a somewhat "challenged" audience shall we say, makes me wonder if she can actually tell the difference between the two.... "And the meek shall inherit the earth!"...But they don't say when?.... The UK and by extension the Isle of Man cannot have a signed trade deal until the UK leaves the EU and that includes any interim (Half in half out stage) if one there be... Also, countries but especially the USA and Japan that want a trade deal with the UK will not be able or willing to conclude it until they see what sort of trade relationship we have with the EU at the end of the day. There is a lot of inward and outward to and fro to be considred and not just in physical goods and transhipment.. Crucially, this must also include a settlement on financial and particularly "passported services" as the City of London and UK in general is like Wimbledon...People come to play in our club because of what it is. Then there is the massive issue of harmonisation by way of standards and "the way thongs are done" between the UK and USA..Presently we are part of progressive cross border harmonisation in the Single Market but harmonising the ways and means and standards between the UK and USA will be starting all over again... So yes a deal very quickly, but how soon before it becomes effective? How long is a piece of string? Just one or two issues are hormone treated meats and chlorinated chickens...Then the complexity of not just dealing with the USA but fifty states each of which has special interests, a lot of autonomy and laws and taxes etc..And if you thought dealing with 27 member nation states of the EU was hard try and see what happens when Congressmen, Senators and Governors start pushing the case for their home states. The USA is and always has been protectionist..."NMIA" ..Not made in America...I have even known them ban "Smarties", bacon, sausages and John Smith's ales...And London and New York are like two peas in a pod but they are still competitors.... woody2
no reason trade deals can't be signed the day after or before if the uk walks.... aus did a deal in 18 months with the usa, nothing excluded but some fruit juice=easy... people use london for trade because its not eu/usa/asia, most trade is international and not based on the eu domestic market... When will the UK finally walk? It could take a few years yet...Try and read a little globally Australia did a deal with the USA and neither are in the EU and have never been EU members...Different if you are leaving something. London absorbs trade from all over but it is an issue if it will lose business if it leave the Single Market and no longer has "passporting" for services which is the mainstay of the UK...If you look Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt are all pushing to take the business the UK might lose... There is a lot of information available on this issue...The key is that London is "Wimbledon" and if you cannot all play there without free access to the Single Market then it might not be such a good club to play in... No one knows for certain when the UK will leave. There is so much up in the air. And no deal can be settled until other countries know the full details of what the UK will get...and there is the issue of the "slow Brexit" or interim period and which is gaining momentum.. No one will want to commit until they know exactly what relationship the UK has with the EU... The more there is doubt the harder it will be...The more there is a shadow the harder it is to commit...It is the uncertainty that is causing the trouble....Read and look around the world and see! No one knows! And until they know and see what is in it for them nothing much will happen with regard to complex trade deals which may well take years. mojomonkey
So it appears Trump's son was in the meeting, Trump's son in law was in the meeting, Trump's campaign manager was in the meeting, the meeting was in Trump's building and Trump was in the building at the time of the meeting, but Trump is still claiming he knew nothing of the meeting. He's either lying or his team are making big decisions without his knowledge, either way he's looking dumber every day. Personally I think Trump liked the idea and sound of being President more than the actual day to day reality of being President. He strikes me as an overgrown spoilt child that gets bored easily.
