slinkydevil
David Cretney will ask permission to spend £1.8 million pounds to go ahead with demolition. He’ll also ask the court’s permission to borrow more than half a million pounds over a 20 year period to go towards the cost of pulling down the structure." <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't understand - okay £1.8 million to demolish. Whats this half a million and why 20 years? Surely demolish is the same as pulling down the structure? Why not just spend £1.85 mill instead? RC-Drift.com
Why not sell the site to a developer and let them pay for it
Digga
But anyway, there is much to be learnt about concrete: In the 1970's it was rather trendy to finish concrete buildings off with a mechanical hammer with a sort of chisel attached. This was intended to give the finish a more 'natural' look. It did take the smooth finish off the concrete though, however this in turn made it susceptible to water/ frost =damage. It also reduced the cover over the reinforcing. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Think you need to learn abit more on concrete my friend, Concrete is not naturally waterproof smooth surface or not, it is the additives that is added when it is mixed that make concrete waterproof, but you are correct about sharp sand making a stronger 'Mix'
Ripsaw
For what little value the Promenade is for entertainment, the site might as well be sold to a developer and let them pay for the demolition... on the condition that a suitable alternative location is found for the building of some sort of public facility. The money that Government have spent, and intend to spend on the building since the doors closed. they could have put towards such a new facility. But once the smooth surface of concrete is removed it will become more porous. It is very doubtful that the reinforcement would be exposed to such an extent as it is today, if the surface of the cast concrete had not been hammered off. You will note that on Summerland where the surface has not been hammered off the concrete has remained intact.
Busby
I think the £1.5m should be spent on putting the building back into a useable state. I also worked on the building of the original Summerland and was in it the day it burnt down. I can't believe that a building which is only 30 years old is being demolished. The most visible defects on the front of the building are, I believe, only cosmetic. If you saw the size of the beams holding up the Piazza level you would laugh at any suggestion that it was unsafe. I don't believe that there is anything wrong with the building that couldn't be put right with £1.5m spent sorting it out. A skin of facing brick would certainly tidy up the front elevation. Remember, Summerland is the only large Venue we have over here - and by Manx standards it is MASSIVE! Better spending £1.5m renovating it than pulling it down - as you have something to show for the money spent. The thought of demolition makes me feel sad. Once its gone - there will NEVER be anything like it again. I think it should be retained as an entertainment complex. Surely, someone would buy it?? [put it on e-bay!]
Slim
Na, it has to go. It was full of asbestos, and the decision to expose those vertical steels has I gather put the structure at risk. Big beams are no use if your verticals are stuffed!
Deejay Denzel
It ain't full of asbestos anymore! It all got stripped out, every door in the building had asbestos in would you believe. Every structural beam and riser areas had asbestos in and they were all stripped. The building is a shell now as they spent months stripping all the interior walls and fixtures out too (I have over 1000 pictures during those stripping stages to prove!) Modern fire proofing methods and a good clad of modern materials would see the building right. oh and yes bringback the cave (or leave it there when the rest of the building is lowered if so be it. Alex
For what little value the Promenade is for entertainment <snip> <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Is this apart from the sea, sand and seaweed, the many restaurants, take-aways and hotels, the Villa Marina complex complete with cinema, bars, public gardens, concert halls and children's play area, the various public houses, the amusement arcade and snooker area, the Venue, Paramount City, the Lido Cinema, the casino, the bingo halls, Colours, Paragon restaurant, the various shops, the tenpin bowling and nightclub surrounding it, the Chill bar, the Office bar and grill, the promenade walkway and cycle lane and the 2 or 3 small swimming pools? I'd like to see basically the exact same thing put there in place of Summerland, a swimming pool (yes, another), bars, restaurants and cafe's, maybe a nightclub and a new cinema. An entertainment complex basically, which is what the prom should be for, as opposed to the flatland housing estate it's slowly becoming.
