hardly independent.......

the only good news is they will run out of money someday to fund the propaganda......

Given the published accounts and balance sheet it’s not likely to run out of money any time soon.

Its private proprietors who run propaganda sheets.

As for tax dodge, well it was tax efficient planning, giving the paper away aa a life time transfer. Pretty altruistic really.

The trust appoints editors, and doesn’t interfere with editorial policy. Guardian editors are in post for incredibly long periods by comparison to the editors of other papers who get sacked by proprietors frequently.  No dividends are paid, so no commercial pressures for profit.

Clue is in the name Pongo, The Scott Trust

If any family has defined the modern Guardian then it would surely be the marvellous Wainwrights. Not the Scotts (who are no longer trustees).

The trust was not set up to "continue the narrow political views of the family" (Woody's calumny). It was set up to preserve editorial independence. And a surname does not have a political view.

The constitution requires one Scott trustee/director. It’s been Russell Scott since 2015.

The trust provides for no party political affiliation.

Not sure about the Wainwrights. Care to elucidate?

Sorry. I didn't realise that.

My point to Woody is that a family does not have a single politics. Especially over almost 100 years.

A handful of Wainwrights have written for the Guardian, on and off, since the 50s. Typically about the north. They're on the 3rd generation now. And the other brother writes for The Economist. A strong and serious liberal tradition. More humanist than political.

Why ouch? At its best, this is a forum where adults can discuss, learn and form opinions. The open minded accept that they are sometimes mistaken and are gracious when corrected. At its worst it’s just the tedious bleating of unformed minds trying to spread the fear and hatred they are programmed to spew by their own twitter feeds and facebook accounts.
