The cruise ship organises tours, and the people pay the cruise company £50 quid for coach trip to Ramsey and back. There are people in the Tourist Board who provide cruise ship operators with lists of all the available tour opportunities. Cruise ships in general do not organise trips themselves. They get someone local to do all that, then they add a substantial mark up onto what Tours, say, charge them for an off the peg coach tour and guide.
monasqueen
Some ships allow their chefs freedom to buy local produce wherever they land. Those will stock up with queenies, etc...
thebees
Not only are there cruise ships and cruise ships but also there are independent travellers and package tourists on those cruise ships. Here is some good freeBee advice - When booking a cruise do it independently avoid the likes of Thompson and Saga (like the plague), we were in a group of 6 on our boat & they were nice people, the other group was made up of 30+ ruffians, we had better food, a better excursion van & our guides were amazing. They will hammer down the prices for everything. They will call the shots. It's not even a case of the tail wagging the dog - there isn't a dog. The cruise operators are in absolute control, they've been in the business a long time and know how to play the game and will play off one port against another. thebees
The commerce side of this is not even a problem, that's the positive side of the whole idea. The power of Irish sea is being ignored, how on earth are they going to protect the ships from the sea? mental.

cheesypeas
They don't appear to be getting financially raped by the cruise companies in Lerwick. They positively love the ships coming in. Surely the Isle of Man has more to offer than they do? We are in a good place geographically too. Stepping stone between to bigger ports of call, and they wouldn't use any extra fuel steaming between Ireland and the UK. Split the cost between private and public. If no private money offered, then no go. We do have more experience here in all things shipping, than in running airports.

I certainly agree about Thomson. Horrendous. And the clientele are what they deserve. People who go to a buffet, finger the rolls then put them back on display, and nibble as they go. Lager lout types. Saga have been very good in comparison. Good food, which is plated to order, not dished up canteen style. They give their chef a budget for local purchases. I've not encountered anything in the way of ruffians. I think that must be the exception, and you must have been very unlucky, bees.

There is a niche market with these smaller ships, but that can be catered for without much further expenditure. The sort of people who will want to visit the Island on a cruise will be using these sort of specialist operators anyway. They're usual happy to move passengers by launch - some may not even go to Douglas, stopping in Peel Bay. I'd actually get MNH to deal with them all as they mainly tend to go to their sites anyway. P.K.
How big are the smaller cruisers? I'm thinking revisiting the wrecked pier at PE. Buffet lunch on the whistle stop. Maybe coach to the castle at Peel. Grab yourself a kipper. Stuff like that.
