This is from the governments 2012 strategy.  £100 per passenger straight to treasury with a spend of £75 per passenger on island.

Wonder how much it costs government to advertise and administer cruise ship tourism? Is the income worth the effort?  Or justification to keep a bloated tourist team of civil servants?

It's pretty much complete fantasy stuff.  £10 per head (not £100) in direct income is just about plausible in terms of transportation, train tickets, MNH entries and so on (if they all took the trips, which you can bet they didn't) but that doesn't include the fact that these things would also have costs to government as well, even if you're just looking at marginal costs.

The £75 per head economic benefit is just fantasy stuff however, no doubt based on some bonkers calculation where every £2 fridge magnet is somehow multiplied up until you get the the figure they want to see.  Like practically everything else the DfE does this is all just an excuse for bullshit merchants to prance around feeling important.

I love the phrase " It can be calculated" which seems to mean essentially we can make the figures be whatever we want them to be

Speak to anybody who actually deals with cruise ship passengers direct. They'll tell you that the daily spend is limited to a bus/train ride, castle/museum ticket and an unremarkable purchase. We can't rely on this non business mentality any longer.

That's exactly why they put a GP in charge of enterprise, I hoped the Dr might have a bit more about him but he appears to have been absorbed into govt fantasy land thinking.

In Gibraltar they are dumped in a street full of booze, tobacco, perfumes and jewellers. They buy plenty.

Malcolm Couch used the title Dr., so they gave him the job of running the health service in spite of his real-world work experience being 26 years in finance and income tax.

When Captain Brew (presumably an old sea-dog) retired from being head of sea ports, they gave Ann Reynolds the job on the assumption that seaport and airport must be the same kind of thing. It seems she wasn't too au fait with things like silt, but no matter.

OK, Couch and Reynolds were not politicians, but the same kind of people are making the decisions.

When Allinson was Manx Utilities chairman he announced that £20 million would be spent giving everyone a new meter. In an interview he said it would not cost the consumers a penny because Manx Utilities would pay for everything. So where does MU get its money from?

Just after he was elected first time, there was a Tynwald vote on the MHKs not having to invoice for £7,000 of expenses. Allinson said he didn't have time to fill out invoices because he was working 24/7 for the electorate. I later read that he still works as a GP, and presumably is getting paid for it.

I voted for Allinson the first time around, but not the second time.

That’s bollocks, have you actually been on a cruise?

The passengers on these high end cruises want heritage sites, steam trains etc & have most probably been to the big cities.

Yes, I have lots of times and cruising has gone very down market since the early/ mid 80s.

Modern cruise ships are more akin to Butlins/ Pontins holiday camps on sea and have that type of class of passenger in the main these days.

Gone are the days of "A Deck"  Cabins  and the first class privileges with dinner at the Capitan's table.

The plebs have taken over what was my favourite type of holiday.

The type who would dock on the IOM are even worse, might as well put an advert in the Daily Sport for tourists.

Don’t think seven seas, Oceania & Azamara could be classed as Butlins but maybe you wouldn’t know about that class of ship😀
