UC is a good first step but what is needed is legislation whereby if there is work available that a person is capable of doing then they MUST do it - or go hungry. What do you think of the rise in suicides since "fit-to-work" assessments and Universal Credit were rolled out?

If people had not spent YEARS being "feather bedded" then it would not have come as such a shock to be told "you can work - go get work" There is also a very effective appeals procedure if they think they have been hard done to. Additionally I've seen people in wheelchairs in jobs, people with limbs missing in jobs, people with quite severe arthritis in jobs, even people that are somewhat ESN in jobs so there's not many physical difficulties that actually prevent someone actually working. I think I'd draw the line at terminal cancer though. There have been some cases of people passed fit to work while dying. I think we need to have a little compassion. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/terminally-ill-universal-credit-claimants-16522313 Edited February 9, 2020 by woolley

No there isn't and in any event how would YOU know? For "effective" read "failed" or similar. Their judgement, even on appeal, has been very very questionable.
