P.K.
From yesterdays Guardian: At least 69 suicides linked to DWP's handling of benefit claims Watchdog warns true number of cases where claimants took own lives as a result of DWP actions could be far higher Families and campaigners have demanded a public inquiry after a government watchdog found that at least 69 suicides could have been linked to problems with benefit claims over the last six years. Amid anger from the loved ones of some of those who took their lives in circumstances where difficulties with the Department of Work and Pensions played a role, the National Audit Office (NAO) report said that the true number of deaths linked to claims could be far higher. And it said that until recently the DWP had failed to actively seek information from coroners and families, or investigate all of the cases that were reported to it. The government watchdog warned that although the DWP said it regarded the internal investigations as a way of improving the safety and quality of its services, the DWP had admitted that it has no idea whether lessons from the reviews were ever learned or their recommendations ever implemented. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/feb/07/dwp-benefit-related-suicide-numbers-not-true-figure-says-watchdog-nao

Unfortunate but when people have been feather bedded for years and suddenly get faced with real life some just can't take it. That's life. When people have been cosseted for years and have to face the cold reality of taking on responsibility for themselves it's obvious that there will be some who have become soft. There's an appeal process that is there to be used. Their choice. It's NOT absolutely dreadful, it's a fact of life. It's unfortunate, but it's just how the cookie crumbles. Good idea as long as the Government provides access to free ID cards so that those from poorer backgrounds are not discriminated against. Only four months behind. An improvement I believe...? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/oct/15/voter-fraud-government-id-plan The requirement to produce photo ID at the ballot box is not without pitfalls. To begin with, it’s neither mandatory nor universal to have ID in this country.....
