Anyone who understands currencies to any extent will also understand that if countries share a currency then they share already monetary policy. Therefore they also have to share fiscal policy or else the thing will not work. That means, at least, having a single finance ministry. It’s not a big surprise.

It makes no sense people arguing against closer union, that countries should stand alone - if they also argue against countries, like say Scotland, being able to leave the UK. The EU is like a bigger version of the UK. Does it really make any sense Scotland having the same currency? Or Liverpool? Those arguing against a shared currency for Europe (and therefore close union) should also logically be arguing that different parts of the what is currently still the UK would have different interest rates.

Italy also produces all sorts of luxury goods. But that’s not the point. It’s no different Italy and Germany having the same currency than Liverpool and the City of London having the same currency. But for that to work they need common fiscal policy and, therefore, the same finance ministry. (Or Milan and Sicily for that matter).

If you don’t believe that the € can work on that basis then there is no reason to believe that GBP or the UK is sustainable either.
