The turnpike roads were also built in the USA and the road builders there were known as "Pikers"... The roads were entered through a series of tollbooths and across the road was set horizontally a large pike which could swing across and back again. You paid the toll and the pike was swung away. Swinging it back closed the road. They were safer than the usual tracks and parish roads and there was much less chance of being stopped by a highwayman as you had all that hard road to run along. Not bogged down on the tracks in the woods on the other roads. Highway robbers needed concealment. It would be like a highwayman on the M25. Britain was the main instigator of the Council of Europe which created the ECHR by way of a treaty they signed in London May 5th 1949. Later the human rights convention was imported into domestic law as before then you had to take the UK to court in Strasbourg. Now you can do human rights cases locally. As for ‘Yid’, isn’t that just used for the Ashkenazi (Ethnically German) Jews who originated in the Rhineland and migrated into the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth and Russian Empire? (The red-headed speakers of the Germanic language Yiddish specifically, rather than the ethnically Hebrew Jews of Ethiopia and the mixed race Sephardic (Spanish), Maghrebi (North African) and Mizrahi (Syrian/Iraqi/Palestinian) Jews? Hope I haven’t caused you apoplectic rage by raising such a question. I know how sensitive you can be to anti-semitism - so before you rant, there’s none intended.
