You wouldn't know irony if it bit you on the backside.

You probably still think it's a little known product from Apple.

" a proposal to introduce a "universal basic income" of €780 per month for every Italian citizen, funded by the EU."

It's a separate issue - but universal income is going to make increasing sense in a world of automation. That's what the new economics will be about. Central banks or govts create money by spending or lending it. Govt controls money supply and inflation by taxing excess liquidity and the hoarding of cash (as opposed to investing). Corporations need consumers who actually have money to spend. Or else what is the point of corporations as they employ ever fewer people? People will need to be paid to be consumers. Or else the economic cycle will grind to a halt.

We were promised a future in which automation would mean that we typically work less. That should not mean people living in poverty. Especially since the liquidity which keeps the economy flowing is a shared resource.

The economics of the future will be somewhat different. The acquisition of wealth will no longer be the driving force in our lives.

Universal income is universal poverty.

Universal income is an interesting concept, put forward by both sides of the political spectrum in history but it seems doomed to fail. Finland recently trialed it and concluded it wouldn't work on a national scale. I assume the market would just inflate to take account of the basic income.
