It was last gasp for them to get it through as it stands. Failed. Maybot could not get the WA through even without the Political declaration. The Brexiteers who are voting against are at least doing so on principle because they see the deal as not leaving the EU. This is understandable as the whole process has been a creature of the EU meant to keep the UK tied in to the customs union. They tried to disguise the fact as the "Irish backstop" but it was spotted and called out. Whilst this reluctance is understandable it may turn out to be unwise on the basis of half a loaf being better then none, and now they risk none. Bank the gains and then press on for a more complete break later might have been advisable and much more pragmatic. The Labour Party objections to the deal are simply politically calculating and disingenuous. They claim to want a customs arrangement and single market, so the WA should hold no problems for them. If they get what they say they want they will have to sign up to it in any case. Their position is ridiculous. This cannot be laid at May's door.

But the backstop was not an EU idea... it was the UK Government that wanted it because otherwise the Union is at risk. Particularly as Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU. Particularly as Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU. Not quite. The EU proposed a NI only backstop, but the UK negotiators knew that NI would not wear that, so they proposed the UK wide one. In the event, none of it has been accepted, but unless there is no deal, it will have to be.
Non-Believer
Perhaps one or two people and political organisations in the UK need to realise that the days of UK empire are over for ever; that globalisation is the new world; and that UK economy has largely become service industry based, with foreign owned manufacturing based here for one reason only - EU and attendant area access.

Leaving the EU does not change globalisation. The EU creates a large trading bloc with can compete with the USA and the upcoming economies. Took a principled stand and the vote of no confidence was following a campaign led by a past UKIP candidate for constituency who joined the Torys last year. It seems entry-ism isn't only a Labour issue.
