Shake me up Judy
Both the IRA and the British government used innocent people as pawns in the IRA's war of independence. McGuinness knew that they had arrested and imprisoned innocent people for the pub bombings; and the police just had to pick up some 'Paddies' to fit the crime. It suited both sides and furthered both their ultimate aims. It became a very dirty war early on in the conflict and I doubt we know even half of what really went on. P.K.
Some things about that time still rankle though. The Bloody Sunday march was illegal. The planks had every right to go in hard to break up an illegal gathering. That's why they were there. There were "operations" including snipers and bombers set to kill British troops who were actually deployed to try and prevent the Catholic (IRA supporting) minority having their homes burned-out around them. But VERY important are the ROE. The police only have to believe they are being threatened to open fire with the full backing of the law. The planks, however, have to survive a cowardly attempt to murder them before they are allowed to try and save themselves. Shome mishtake shurely....
