We're the same age and when I was at school (even at primary) it was only ever known as football, never soccer.

Perhaps it’s a regional thing. I’ve no idea. We played rugger in autumn term, Soccer in winter term, cricket between Easter and Whit and then Athletics/Tennis through June & July.

I use “we” loosely. I endured it when I couldn’t bunk off.

Must have been a posh school. Many schools prioritised Rugby and actually called it football ( rugby football).

Us working class lads would never use the phrase soccer. Never, ever, ever.

That's what I thought.  Football was rugby and soccer was football.  Although, I haven't give it much thought as I am uninterested in any of it.

Football is a game for gentlemen played by gentlemen.

Football (premier league acknowledged) is a game played by diving actors, who are overpaid and full of their own importance, who spend more time rolling around on the turf than playing football !

Thankfully that ethos has not overflowed to the lower leagues.

Was talking to someone recently, who told me the costs for this project stand at £107million so far. How accurate I don’t know, but was hazard a guess it won’t be too far off.

Scroll a long way back through these pages and you'll see that I opined that it would cost £100m.
