Indeed this Manx Forums topic started in March 2017. Except it was IoMG that paid for the first concrete pontoon floating landing stage when the wooden Victorian one was past it’s sell by date and there were no landing fees coming in from the Canadian steamers any more. That was to Mersey Docks & Harbour Board/Mersey Docks & Harbour Company Limited. Approx 1979/80. Then 5 years later IoMSPCo abandoned Liverpool as a year round port. Then when that sank IoMG, not IoMSPCo, paid for its replacement. Of course the relevant owner at the time, of all 3, charged the SPCo to use the landing stages. Let's hope they don't repeat the stunt this time around! Although we would get by just fine without Liverpool. Maybe we need one of these bad boys and just land on Formby Beach to avoid landing fees?
2112
It is as reported this morning on the NPM that the DOI can’t give a definitive costing for the new works and marine dolphin mooring at King Edward VIII pier. £3.25 million has been allocated to the budget. It’s reassuring to know that yet again the DOI are very financially prudent with taxpayers money, especially after the Liverpool Landing Stage fiasco. So if taking into account, the usual inflation and extra costs of raw materials, and the Manx Factor, lack of labour etc, that the costs will up towards £10 million? I wonder if Minister Thomas has his excuses ready? Considering the new Liverpool Ferry Terminal will be opening in June 2023, and the new boat Manxman will be in Douglas either later this year or early 2023 before the sailings to Liverpool begin. Will the proposed new works in Douglas Harbour be completed to schedule, bearing in mind that the plans have been put out to tender? Will they discover that more works will be required and therefore will increase the costs and push back completion? To be fair if you listen to the clip on the website, the reason they can't give a definitive cost is that the works haven't gone out for tender yet, so they won't have that figure until one is chosen. But it would have been nice to have some sort of indication. It's a bit confusing as to what they are actually proposing as a dolphin is usually just a protective structure, while this seems more like a semi detached (joined with a walkway) and presumably narrower extension to the pier. doc.fixit
Will it really cost that much for a footbridge? Is it going across the top of one of the old lock gates? I've just seen the latest images of the edifice they are building. Is it a mansion, a castle or just a monument to how to waste public money? Given our government have spunked away £70m on a £3m project, who the hell is going to challenge them on costs? 1

The bridge is probably a thank you for the 30% of project costs that have gone into the previous mayors back pocket. 2
