Taxpayers to dig for £20M for Liverpool Dock

The NPM reports that the arrival of the Manxman is going to be late, as faults were discovered during sea trials. They have to repaired by contractors and the shipyard, followed by sea trials. Therefore it won’t be ready for June. Like with Liverpool Landing Stage, which may or not be ready for this summer.

Has a budget and/or project plan ever been published?  Or indeed created?  Infinite money projects are the preserve of the emirate states, not a tiny island in a recession.

New boat broken already?

Comical reporting - wtf is significant problems? Is it totally fucked? I’m sure Minister Thomas and Professor Ashford the islands shipping engineering expert will keep the island informed.

They didn’t say it won’t be ready for June. They said departure from Korea would be delayed. It was due to leave before end February and arrive 4 weeks later. Then inspections, passenger certification, berthing trials and crew familiarisation through April May..

Its first sea trial was 10 December. Mainly manoeuvres. Very slow. Alleged to have stripped a set of bearings on one drive shaft. Went out again 28/29 January, for what was supposed to be speed trial. Only hit 19kts. Was supposed to be able to hit 26kts.

Sea trials take place before delivery and acceptance for good reason. It’s not like a Ford Escort. Once accepted and delivered you can’t just take it back under warranty.

However Im a bit confused by the MR interview with Brian Thompson who said the issue was with the gearbox. I was under the impression that the engines were used to generate electricity that powered the electric motors which direct drive the propellers. I didn’t think such a system involved a gearbox.

I did question the gearbox thing previously with electric final drives but it's possibly some form of reduction gearing.

I presume the article had changed since you originally read it as unfortunately now clearly reads it is delayed. Fingers crossed it can be sorted in good time although I bet there is an extra cost and it is passed on to us!

It’s delayed. They don’t know how long for. There’s no time estimate, so June is just 2112 speculating.

The plan was for her to arrive March and take familiarisation sailings through May.

She was to take over fully just before TT.

But tickets, seats, cabins, have only been sold at Ben capacity levels - just in case.

If it’s not been constructed to plan and technical specs the yard has to do for free. The problem comes if the yard says the marine architects got the design and spec wrong!
