Later it was the colonies that paid for the upkeep of Blighty. Today it is the City of London and the banking industry. Same system, different methods. There are a lot of things I would like to know about Manx economics but don't have the time or knowhow to ferret out for myself. Er, aren't you confusing the trade deficit with public debt? Looting galleons doesn't help the trade deficit, but I can quite understand that it would help reduce public debt.
