Bump-stock's need to go, no reason for any member of the public owning one. I think some states have already prohibited them.

Girl, 6, among 3 fatally shot in tent at Iowa state park (msn.com)

A six-year-old girl and her parents have been shot dead while camping in the US state of Iowa, police have said.

The bodies of Sarah and Tyler Schmidt, both 42, and their daughter Lula were found in their tent in the Maquoketa Caves State Park.

The couple's nine-year-old son survived the attack, a neighbour said.

Police believe the suspected shooter, a 23-year-old man, then turned the gun on himself. His body was also found in the park.

There was an incident last week in another US shopping mall which I've not seen in UK media.

Mall was busy, suddenly a shooter opens fire with an AR-15, immediately shooting 3 people dead and wounding others. In the 15 seconds from the moment he pressed the trigger, a young fella, seeing what was happening and legally carrying a concealed 9mm handgun reacted by firing 10 rounds, hitting the perpetrator 8 times killing him instantly. The local sheriff, with much fanfare, claims the young fella a hero, saving countless lives by his swift reaction and enthusiastically applauding the accuracy because of the lengthy distance involved between said hero and the shooter.

The NRA and its affiliates, naturally, are all over it, claiming it supports 2nd amendment rights about gun ownership.

Contrast that with the hero himself now being banned from the mall for breaking their rules by having a firearm on its premises, where it's strictly prohibited, and may face legal action.

Heard about this last night.  Impressive skills from the young man.  No military or police training.  Also I read he didn't have a concealed carry permit, he was carrying under the recent Supreme Court judgement.

Despite this only 5% of mass shootings in the states are combated by a gun carrying civilian.

I certainly don't agree with the solution to guns being more guns argument, which is currently rife and as you note the NRA are all over this for positive press.  Interesting the young man seems to be keeping a very low profile after this.   I honestly don't know the solution.  There are too many guns in circulation and very few would hand in guns that get deemed illegal under an amnesty or similar.

Five people including an off-duty police officer have been shot dead with several injured in Raleigh, North Carolina, officials say.

Police say a suspect has been arrested.

The shooting occurred near the Neuse River Greenway, a popular trail on the outskirts of the state capital, the city's mayor said.

A motive is yet to be established, but Raleigh Police Lieutenant Jason Borneo said it would probably "come to bear" in the coming days.

"Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference.

The shooting broke out just after 17:00 EDT (21:00 GMT).

Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin later reported that the gunman was being "contained in a residence in the area" by police.

Raleigh police then tweeted that the suspect had been taken into custody.

The gunman, a "white male juvenile", was taken into custody, Mr Borneo said.

At least two other people including another police officer were wounded and taken to hospital, the mayor said.

One victim remains in a critical condition in hospital, Lieutenant Borneo added.

Mass shootings are a consistent problem in the US.

More than 34,000 people have died in shootings in the US in 2022, more than half of which were from suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.

Yet still they won’t sort out their archaic gun laws…
