There are now 6* hotels in parts of the world frequented by Arab sheiks Lord knows what additional services they provide, & at what human cost An additional layer of irritatingly obsequious fawning no doubt. Manximus Aururaneus
Even those who (for whatever reason) do not use high-end hotels and restaurants should appreciate the almost direct cash injection their customers make into the local economy - it is one of the most efficient tax-collecting streams on offer. VAT (20% on booze) on both hotel rooms and restaurant meals plus additional alcohol duties plus say 10 % tips on average put a direct cash injection into any local economy either directly to staff (wages and tips) - businesses (profits) or local social services (vat and tax). They are (almost) free 'Golden Geese' to a local economy, but hey, knock them if you want to. Donald Trumps
VAT on hotel rooms is 5% on the Isle of Man Unless the hotels are locally owned, then AirBnB are likely to put more money into the local economy & much better reflect the local culture & character, which is what visitors should be interested in (aside from business matters)

Restaurants in hotels & out usually put a compulsory 10% service charge on bills for tables of ten nowadays - rarely this goes to the serving staff concerned, & some unscrupulous operators use it to pay wages
