pongo
Another straight in / out vote would be a mistake IMO. I hope they don't push for that. That moment has passed. Especially given the events in Italy - eg what has been going on with the simplistically populist coalition of opposites which was trying to form a government. Clearly their proposition for govt was contradictory, unachievable and economically illiterate. But the way in which it has played out so far works against support for the EU. To the man in the street it looks as if democracy has been undermined by the imaginary 'elites'. And anything backed by George Soros is going to look like a conspiracy to the flat-earthers. He's their #1 bogeyman. I believe it would make much more sense to move forward in a more subtle way based on a positive vision for the future relationship. And maybe give a little and watch it falter.

Seems like a good idea whatever the outcome might be. It's high time the UK introduced laws like they have done in Hungary to put a stop to Nazi collaborators like George Soros using NGOs to interfere in the domestic politics. pongo
31 minutes ago, Snorri said: How did George Soros break the Bank of England? In those days monetary policy was set directly by the Treasury - ie was, like fiscal policy, under direct political control. In that sense it was the London govt which he was betting against rather than the Bank. The policy of shadowing the DM was political - but economically unsustainable. As he demonstrated. He did the UK a tremendous favour. Leaving the ERM paved the way for the boom which began in the late 90s. And it's partly thanks to Soros that monetary policy is no longer under direct political manipulation. And the ERM debacle is part of the reason why Gordon Brown and Ed Balls, in the 90s, came up the "5 economic tests" which effectively prevented Britain from ever joining the Euro.
