Smart Meters are coming

Ahhh the BBC

So some are installed where there is no phone signal. Great. Did they not check how much signal there was before changing the meter?

As for half them going dumb after installation,  that does not match my experience. Of course there is no link to check that factoid out.  Nearly said woodyfact...

Edit : A bit of rooting around shows this to usually due to the customer switching suppliers to save a few bob (if only here....) and the new supplier's technology being incompatible with the old supplier's hardware. We haven't switched suppliers so the 9 on site are all working fine. If you just sucked up the BBC's story without checking, 4.5 of these should have failed by now.

Not just the BBC old chap (try The Times, City A.M., Independent, even that most enlightening of journals The Grauniad).

The news actually came from a UK parliamentary group. Did you not read the whole article?

Are they going to be obligatory and will we have to pay for them ?

Yes and yes. Unless you have a house which is completely eco-friendly and self sufficient. Even then I'm sure they'd find a way to put one in. This is political decision being pushed right across the developed world, nothing to do with cost-cutting and convenience.

Why are they using GSM network? Surely they would be better settting up a LoRa or other Narrowband network that can be used for other things such as vehicle tracking.

What type of communication to those big waste bins with the solar panels use? I think they can be monitored remotely so only get emptied when full rather than every day.

If they are intent on doing this it should be preceded by a one year trial on 200 houses in different areas first.

Otherwise it will be another expensive disaster.

It'll be an expensive disaster. Of that there is nothing more certain.

No more perhaps than any of the others reporting on it.

Here's the official version for comparison.

Has anyone seen the MUA business case for it?

It doesn’t have a business case. There is none that would pass even a high school class project. It’s a political decision, the only issue is where that directive has come from.
