Surely the bank should have done some due diligence? You've got to wonder what position they (the bank) would be in if it was any other customer than the IOMG, who's backers (us) are unfortunately all too familiar with bailing them out after such cock ups.

The loans to Barclays were repaid many years ago & ratified by IOMG. At the end of the day it’s an IOMG Owned company & any default reflects directly on IOMG

Yet again the Manx taxpayer stumps up for a very poor quality service in dubious circumstances with no comeback whatsoever on the supplier. Apparently the new MD moved here from Jersey 12months ago but still has her car on Jersey plates. (According to a pal at the bank anyway) But I bring a car from the UK last year and they breathe down my neck to get the damn thing registered. Yes, but as Chair of this monopoly Callister would have had very little to do with the loss. What could he possibly have brought to the role to make any difference, for better or worse? Moving him to Minister for DHSC similarly will make no difference to the results in that Department. What we have is 24 MHKs who need to be given stuff to do and a number of Ministerial appointments to fill. Of the 24, a decent number have neither the skills or experience, in previous employment or politically to bring anything of significance to any role they are appointed to. Some senior roles do require somebody of reasonable calibre and those jobs tend to be given to those that are considered most able. The remainder of the Ministerial posts are divided amongst the remaining, more experienced politicians on the basis of the amount of work or influence the Minister will have and the ability of the candidate. Of course, loyalty and trust, as perceived by the CM, also play a part. DHSC used to be considered one of the more demanding positions but it is now a bit like the DHA post, where most of the responsibility is held by operational heads and the workload is much lighter, as result. Add in the issue of some of the more experienced politicians being optants (Juan Watterson, for example) and the "talent" pool gets even shallower. The fundamental problem here is having a relatively large number of politicians to elect but very little to attract decent candidates and virtually no selection criteria other than a willingness or desire to enter politics. The result is second-rate politics with second-rate candidates. It's the kind of environment where the Rob Callisters of this world can find themselves in positions where they can assume importance far beyond their actual ability. Nothing will change unless the voters demand it, and they aren't. The results speak for themselves. With a large salary thrown in so they think there all important. Just we need capable above anything. Callister , Corlett and lots more are nothing more than message men and women without the charisma or inteligence to reach any heights. Nothing will change till they cull the numbers and split the salaries between the remaining. With a job description that means we get quality. Pipe dream sadly .

A one hour handover shows how little a minister is involved in the department. May as well just put the Churchill dog in government.

Funnily enough someone suggested pretty much the same thing this afternoon in the Co-op. Leading from the front they called it. Mr Callister should propose it at next Tynwald. We are all in this together, aren't we ?
