Fair play to Rob for trying to think, but what not call it something short 'n snappy, like the Tourist Board?

Yes, on one hand Mr Allison says service might need to be scaled down, which means they will be, then Rob wants to open a new Department, which would need to be staffed. He wants to try to come up with ideas that would save Government costs instead of thinking how to increase them, or is he like Mr Hooper, who wants to increase taxes on the Manx people.

Would there be significant additional costs? Wouldn't the folk who already do the work where they sit now still be employed? At least there'd be some joined up approach to marketing the visitor experience, or at least you would think so.

Why?  She's young, female, a local authority member and belongs to the Manx Labour Party.  Surely none of these things will make you a target of criticism on Manx Forums?

Zara Lewin also seems competent and seems to have avoided the toxic environment up there.

Mr Callister told Manx Radio he felt the presentation and proposed ideas were not in the best interest of the Island and has suggested the creation of the Department of Tourism, Heritage, Culture, Transport and the Arts while will line with the Islands plan to have 500,000 visitors by 2032:

That's a word salad of department name. Surely Heritage and the Arts are covered by Culture?

How about the Department of Tourism, Arts & Transport or D-TAT.

This thread has 295 pages. Every time someone posts it goes to the top of the forum. And has done for 5 years.

You do realise that when this happens, Rob gets a warm fuzzy glow and is emboldened even more to believe he is a shrewd political animal playing on the world stage.

Just stop it please.

Of course there would be extra costs.  These people will insist on a whole new structure with lots of management and strategists and the rest.  Callister's idea is basically just recreating the DCCL, which only existed for four years.

And of course this is the real problem here which has been one of the reasons for failure in Manx government in the last 20 plus years.  They are trying to fix things by reorganising.  Rather than actually tackling difficulties head on, they hope that they can reorganise them out of existence.  But at best all you will do is waste a lot of money and effort and time in creating new structures which still have the same difficulties within them.  At worst you also undermine the bits of the organisation that were working as well.

This applies to Callister's daft idea, but it also applies to the idea that the DoI is 'too big' and reorganising things will improve the performance.  But if you think about it, most of the problems have been due to things going wrong within its parts, not between them and those in charge of the parts being allowed to do whatever they want.  Reorganising the deckchairs won't solve that.

You're assuming that he looks at the Forum Menu, but never clicks on the topic with his name on it and reads the comments.

This seems unlikely.

Does Rob Callister know we already have a 10 year plan for tourism and we are paying people to implement it?

Yes, yes, of course he does, but he also could do with some good publicity.
