To be fair, I don’t think he’s dodging it at all, i think he is as pissed off as the rest of us. It would appear that untruths have been told relating to the construction/timings. I could be wrong

But he’s not conflicted. He isn’t even a minister. He’s a back bencher. How the fuck can a back bencher be conflicted just because government departments are doing stuff they’ve been empowered to do by COMIN/Tynwald? He’s just bricking it about getting it in the neck from hotels and shops over the prom so, once more, has tried to quickly exit himself from the situation before it blows up. That’s all. It would pretty much seem to be his default setting. Just like the DHSC.

To be fair he's raised this issue with Tynwald and pulled the DoI in last Friday for a grilling. He believes he's conflicted because he has delegated responsibility for tourism and now that the hoteliers are / may be getting compensation for losses he is perceiving this as a conflict. Which would be the second enquiry that he is conflicted for because Marlene Maska (Hendy) replaced him for the harbours one.

It just goes to highlight again that people who sit on scrutiny committees shouldn't be in Government. This problem is only going to get worse if departments start to work closer together.

I really don’t see how that stacks up. The man isn’t even a government Minister and has no departmental responsibilities as department leader so how can he possibly be conflicted? He’s not on COMIN and he has no Ministerial / strategic responsibilities in any of the departments involved in the prom. Even if the hoteliers claim compensation he has no key role in any agency paying any compensation out. Sorry, it’s a weak attempt to dodge the very clear bullet heading his way from the hotel industry who will be suffering this summer because if the prom. Not unlike the situation at the DHSC which subsequently blew up so he did a bunk before the crap hit the fan. It was obvious hoteliers and businesses would be asking for cross government support months ago. Delegated authority is not actual ultimate authority for anything.

He's just dodging the impending shitstorm that's coming. Visitor numbers are massively down this year and it's not just Douglas Promenade. No surprise really when there's fuck all to do when people get here!

They could always entertain themselves watching you getting yourself into a lather over everything and anything...

Cruise passenger numbers are well up - this will be hailed as salvation for IOM tourism

Yes, there possibly is better defence for a politician behind the legendary DfE Wall of Sheer Arrogance

You're right, that's exactly how they'll spin it.

I don't quite understand how having 8,000 people coming ashore at a loss-making government owned harbour, to take a ride on a loss-making Government owned train or tram and perhaps spending £3 on a couple of post gardens and a tatty tea towel from Mrs Migin's Minging Gift Emporium actually stacks up as beneficial for the Island.

There could be a million of these cruise visitors but the island would still be losing money hand over fist entertaining them.

Who benefits?

2 train, 11 carriage travelled to Port Erin so the very few cruise passengers can travel by steam back to Douglas. Imagine the costs to implement this, and how much were the cruise passengers paying.

It would be interesting to know the mark up IOM Govt make on the excursions if any or do they just trot out basic passenger numbers.

Recently one of the ships had an American client / passenger whom if you are even remotely interested in Golf would have recognised from miles away - he wanted to do a bit of golf whacking when here, the Cruise Ship quoted him £ 750 +. he organised it himself for less than a £100 and gave the people at Mount Murray a big boost.

Essentially who is making the money the Cruise Operators or the attractions ?  - it's pretty fucking obvious.....

The money stays on board.

Bottles it again to get off the hook from making tough decisions. Apparently just being a member of government is a conflict of interest as it does so many things. How stupid does he think the electorate are?

Did this guy Callister hold down a job for more than a few months before he fooled the onchanites to vote him in?  He has no staying power, thank goodness he will only be a one term wonderment. He needs to resign as a mhk and do us all a favour.
