quilp
Bit of a let-down, really. Poor woman's probably feeling deflated...
quilp
Actually, Sotheby's can't say whether the prank has increased or devalued the artwork. Incredible.
Gladys
Your first thought is that it has destroyed the piece, but possibly it has enhanced the value. I do like Banksy.
Chinahand
Quite wonderful parable on the transience and permanence of genius in art. And the relationship between the artist and the patron. He’s the man!

A proper prank would be if the original piece is rolled up in the cassette and a fake has been shredded.
Freggyragh
That would be entirely missing the point.
Shake me up Judy
If the buyer was genuine then they've just learnt a very valuable lesson.
Gladys
I think they probably have learnt a very valuable lesson - that picture is probably worth a lot more than they paid for it now.
TheTeapot
Went to a Banksy exhibition in Amsterdam, it was as expected, cool, interesting, thought provoking, occasionally forced. Kids enjoyed it far more than expected though. I like this stunt.

I thought the buyer is legally bound to pay for the item as when the hammer went down they legally own it? So Banksy could have destroyed someone else's property. You never know, he might end up cleaning crap graffiti off railway bridges wearing a high-viz with "Community Payback" emblazoned on it. Now THAT would be funny...... Freggyragh
Sold as seen - a piece of art.

How many hours of community service do you think that act of vandalism is worth?
Declan
But had the buyer done due diligence on his purchase he would have spotted the shredder.
