Anytime I visited the Isle of Man, I always enjoyed outdoor eating in places such as the Min-Y-Don cafe and the veranda cafe in the Villa marina theatre in addition to The Cosy Nook. The Cosy Nook in Port Erin, Trafalgar House in Douglas and the Mitre in Kirk Michael were all issued with Proposal to Register Notices (PRN) on Monday, due to their potential special architectural or historical interest. A three week consultation for each building will now be used to gather further information with a final decision made soon after. Personally I don’t think any of the buildings are great architecture that need saving & certainly not the cosy nook cafe !
Non-Believer
Some of the patrons of the Mitre need registering themselves....

TheTeapot
The Mitre might be the oldest still operating pub on the Isle of Man, that or the Raven, and so has some claim to go on historic buildings register.

Buildings aren't only registered because they are 'great architecture' but also if they have historic associations or are interesting or are a rare example of their kind or contribute to the environment of their area in some special way. No doubt one day someone will register the last Dandara house that hasn't fallen to bits. The trouble with architectural discussions on Manx Forums is that they always consist of people saying "We should knock down these old buildings and build something shiny and modern". Which happens and then, several years later, the same people are complaining that the place looks like a shithole with no character. 1

But don't you think we have plenty other " have historic associations or are interesting or are a rare example of their kind or contribute to the environment of their area in some special way" that are not occupying a prime beachfront location that is ideal for a new (and actually useful) building to the benefit of the local economy. Hey, maybe they could move it. Everybody could be happy
Dave Hedgehog
Well the Cosy Nook has officially been added to the protected buildings register so a shitty derelict cottage partially obscured by a cheaply constructed serving hatch and a toilet block will be here for years to come. 7

Excellent post. Does anyone think that if the plans for it's replacement weren't so over the top and were instead more along the lines of knock it down and build a new place on a similar footprint doing a similar thing that this would have been listed?
Chef Raekwon
Yep, well done dickheads. The plans for the replacement should have been improved for sure, but what's there now is a disgrace.

Ridiculous!! Walked round the area a couple of weeks ago & I’d say it’s an eyesore & should be demolished. so that building will be lying derelict for a few more years
Declan
They should take the petition from last year and hold a raffle for the signatorys. Winner gets to swap their house for the Cozy Nook, no money changes hands. Best case scenario is someone who can't get on the housing ladder gets somewhere to live and Port Erin loses an eyesore and a rates burden. Worst case scenario someone with a massive property out of the village gets to live in the "iconic" location they couldn't bare to see destroyed and Port Erin commissioners get an expensive property to sell.
