The first motorway in UK opened,  the Preston Bypass. 8 miles from Bamber Bridge to Fullwood. Two lanes in each direction, no speed limit, no crash barriers, the carriageways separated by a central reservation planted with a privet hedge.

Later incorporated into the M6.

For years a bottle neck, with the M6 at either end being built as 3 lanes. Then widened to 3 and now, mainly 4 lanes.
