Bit of a thread bump here - The Good Doctor Allinson, wearing his MUA hat, now advises (iomtoday) that those owners of electric vehicles will start being charged (no pun intended) for the use of public charging points, "by the end of the year".

Its hard to see how this aligns with their “climate emergency” statement of a few days ago as it probably makes it less likely that people will now rush out and buy electric cars to help them cut emissions which is now a stated government objective. Surely if they want to cut emissions then they need to incentivize people to change their behaviour? What sort of incentive does this really offer for anyone to want to do that? I don't see them handing out any grants, and they aren’t now even going to give away any free eleccy despite the fact the MUA has clear over capacity in power generation - so they’d presumably just prefer that it all goes to waste and nobody uses it? Sounds like they’ve been knobbled by Harmer and his idiot cycling lobby who think people will now take up cycling instead if they have to pay a few p to charge their cars.

Industry's electricity costs have to be subsidised somehow

What!  You're expecting joined-up government in an enormous place like the Isle of Man? For that we'll need a new Department of Joined Up Government to join the existing Department that's supposed to do that (the Cabinet Office) with the rest of government.  And so on.  Forever.

The truth is that despite (or maybe because of) all the people they employ to dream up 'strategies' and write reports,  there is absolutely no genuine vision of what they should be doing to help deal with climate change.  All they are interested in is a 'good' news story about some pointless gesture or statement, even though the vast majority of people on the Island will treat it with the scorn it deserves.  They're so isolated from what people think by the bloated superstructure of the civil service, that any attempt to point out reality is greeted with scorn and indignation.

I doubt it's the cyclists, by the way - they're usually in favour of such things.  It's just another civil servant looking for a pay rise by finding some insignificant 'saving', even though it may have more expensive results elsewhere.

Yes naively I was pretty much expecting some sort of loose link between:

Tuesday = we finally accept we have a climate emergency we need to deal with urgently by cutting emissions

Friday = we are going to start charging all electric car users for using electricity at public charging points

Actually charging for electric charging makes sense. Part of the problem at the moment with charging points is people, for want of a better word, hogging them all day. In the UK a lot of charge points are run by private companies. If you want garages to provide quick charge facilities then you have to get people used to paying for it.

There are two big problem with electric cars on the island: Firstly, the unsuitably of home charging for most people. Given the majority of people use on street parking it is simply not safe to run a power lead across the pavement from your charging point. Retrofitting charging points into narrow pavements is also not an option. The second major problem is that is the power station simply couldn't cope if everyone needed to charge at once overnight. It certainly couldn't if too many fast charge stations were used at once. I'm not even sure the power cable from the UK would be able to make up the shortfall. Most electric cars only need to charge once a week so it probably wouldn't happen but this the Isle of Man and odd things happen here regularly.

If people weren't so obsessed with car ownership an electric self drive taxi service would be perfect for the island.

Im not arguing for or against. I’m just saying it’s completely stupid to declare an immediate climate emergency of national importance at the start of the week, and then start charging people to charge electric vehicles at the end of the very same week. It just shows there is no actual policy about anything. They don’t even charge people in the UK yet so how is that encouraging anyone to drop fossil fuel powered vehicles in the IOM when better incentives now exist in the UK who have not committed to the made up targets we are now talking about?

Fast chargers charge chargers in the UK.

You're right though they really haven't got a clue. The Island is small enough to receive all its electric from renewable energy but because we are still paying for the powerstation they won't even countenance renewables.

Hell a month ago the environment minister didn't even believe there was a climate change crisis!

Even if you didn't believe in climate change not having to suck lung fulls of exhaust fumes everytime you go for a walk would be incentive enough to get rid of petrol cars.

They banned smoking indoors in work places but not cars in underground work garages which pump out more toxins into the air than a quick ciggie right (most of which are next to air conditioning units).

In fairness to the Govt even the protesters don't seem to actually have a plan other than something-needs-to-change.

You think air con units suck ciggie smoke back into the buildings?

Any links for that, DT? Mr Skelly has stated that we've got billions in reserves (somewhere). Not that I believe a word that has come out of his mouth since he started primary school.
