You are absolutely correct and it was that muppet Harmer who stated the need for works was down to the many voids that anytime could swallow a vehicle. Zero voids found apart from opposite the Villa seaside that was a Victorian toilet .

To be fair to Harmer we were talking about voids under the Prom on Manx Forums back in 2011, before Harmer was even in the Keys.   Mind you the information came from the Government via the Man in the Pub rather than the Minister responsible.  Maybe he got his info from the same place.

But then you'd expect someone with a degree in Engineering from Cambridge to ask for more proof than pub gossip.

Perhaps they have suddenly realised this might help stop the sea from just washing straight onto the walkway and road

....the man in the pub would have told them earlier if they had been open....

Mr Black said, "However the contractor has a significant number of issues in securing labour. So for example some of the gangs are from Romania. They’ve gone back to the UK to work."

What a weird and disparaging term to use.

What exactly is weird and disparaging about that statement?

Gang is a totally normal description in the construction industry for a group of men working as a team.

I would have used a different term myself, given the Romanian element, teams would have less of an overtone of criminality.

The word gang comes directly from the term 'work gang' which has echoes of 'slave work gangs'. I personally think that given all the delays/issues with the Prom, his language could have been more sensitive.

Not really true. Gang means 'to go' - still found in Scots and the German 'gangen' - thus a gang is a group who go about together. The stuff about slaves is just silly.

Talking of questionable behaviour...

Where has the money gone?

https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/doi-hiding-overspend-with-prom-scheme-split-says-mhk/

We all knew it would go over budget, but why try and hide it?

Tynwald gave them permission on what to spend it on. DOI need to be held accountable if they've misused the funding.
