Promenade - Megathread

Back on the topic of the Prom. They are supposed to be unleashing their latest batch of temporary traffic light-based hell on users tomorrow (12th August) and taking traffic off the walkway.

There's zero sign of that happening with the new road on Harris Prom not even having it's top layer of tarmac.

Oh, you missed the 'must be' out. I'm sure it will,  but just to correct you, Dandara bought Grant's cottage.

I think there is a stumbling block over a parcel of land Government need for the bypass costing a large sum too ! Bypass my arse, just a ruse so Dandara can build another 350 houses ! HTF are they going to make traffic coming into the village from South via poachers pocket use any of this nonsense ! Oh and then propose to build a supermarket on the very road that is supposed to have traffic problems. The only problems we have is we have weak minded and compliant politicians who will go for any scheme without thought !

Whilst I'm on a rant this sums up the situation here too ....

That will be the next 'bypass' from near Cross Four Ways onto the Airport Road.

Think how many fields that will open up for development. They'll only stop when they reach a Douglas/Onchan style conurbation.

I assume he knows who wrote his cheque as it sounds like a compulsory purchase situation otherwise why would you sell? It was going by the newspaper report. It would also be good if the full costs to us were known. It only seems to be putting money one way.

As someone said above the public purse has chipped in a tidy sum to make sure Dandara can build its 350 houses on green fields. The bypass is the biggest waste of time and money to solve a non problem, problem, which only ever happened for very short periods and now with the advent of more people working permanently from home may well have solved itself.

I’m saying it must be huge. They bought that house at over market value just to knock it down. They’ll probably drop Railway Terrace to widen the road. Then there’s this scheme and all the traffic lights and layout changes. There needs to be transparency around what it’s actually costing us to line Dandara’s pocket.

another nice to have traffic management scheme  where it will cost at least 200K for the lights  only hold up the traffic and will require  more electricians to be employed ,and more management to oversee everything , we can manage without traffic lights at busy junctions like Quarterbridge  and the Braaid cross roads , why is Ballasalla so different ,and there is a zebra crossing on the other side of the railway lines ,. its time we were getting rid of traffic lights   and replacing them with more roundabouts  I was told the recent  replacement lights at St Johns cost almost £300k, and quite a lot of the time  they still don't function properly   Government growth , waste and over engineered grand schemes  is slowly strangling this Island ,

Gawney must have been delighted to have been chairing the interview for this revelation; it happened under his tenure at DOI.

The truth usually outs in time...

Anyone know how the DOI prioritise works and repairs?  Is there any chance they do places they think will have the greatest visibility so people don’t realise how bad some of the roads are and how long they have had holes in them?

For info.  Crew currently filling holes that have been there for months.

Anyone want to guess where?

Harmer and Baker share equal responsibility

I don't think it matters who the politicos are or were at the time, Baker, Harmer, Gawne or nobody at all. The DOI suits would still blunder on from cock up to cock up, secure in the knowledge that there's a bottomless pit of money to bail them out and they're subject to almost zero accountability.

It does matter. Both Harmer and Baker were fully aware of the state of the DOI when they took on the role. They should of had the cahunas to crack some heads together and get results.

But they didn't, they just let the gravy train roll on and on at ever increasing expense and inconvenience to the GMP and future generations.

The pair of them are inept, talentless yes men who only know how to do the bidding of their political master or follow their civil servants.

Baker has recently stated that he was leaving the DOI in a better state than he found it.

Quite unique delusional architecture.....

Going to stick myself in the firing line and defend him here.

How do we know that is not the case from looking in from the outside?  The only people who know if that is the case or not are those who work for the DoI and let’s be honest anyone who had been there any length of time will have a different idea of “better” than we would.

If they are now better structured, doing more work and with more accountability that is better for us, but not for them and to be fair to Mr Baker any changes made since he arrived won’t have materialised into actual improvements to the outside world yet.

Easy to criticise him based on current projects, but realistically any impact he might have had won’t been seen as tangible results for at least another 12 months and long after the prom is finished.

....and long after he is removed from office.

Conversely the ineptitude and incompetence during his reign will be felt long into the future.
