Promenade - Megathread

The roundels were a total embarrassment in terms of road safety. They gave the impression of being a roundabout but with different rules. This used to be a perfectly straightforward T junction. For whatever reason it was turned into a confusing, dangerous, mess.   I know several people that actively sought to avoid going along the prom to avoid these roundels that have no place in a safe road system. Who ever advocated this should be ashamed.

Bad news dude.  The cones are gone already now the guy is out of the manhole.

The roundel isn’t going anyway and despite all the scaremongering still hasn’t caused any accidents that I am aware of.

There was a bit of what looked like car bumper lying on it the other day.

In what way do they give the impression of being a roundabout?

Is there a sign to say you are approaching a roundabout like you would find at a roundabout, or a road marking like you would find at a roundabout?

There is nothing there at all to suggest there is a roundabout.  Not a thing.

Approaching  a junction where the road is decorated with a series of concentric "nearly" circles gives the impression of a roundabout. The road looks as if it is lanes painted on the road. Most drivers slow and give way to traffic from the right thinking it is a roundabout. Many people do u turns on it as if driving around a roundabout. It has been designed with no  concern for safety. And for come reason is called an unmarked junction.

Good they should stay off the road if they’re that stupid.

There isn’t a single legally recognised road marking.  If it was a picture of Alf’s face on the road it still wouldn’t be a roundabout.

There seems to be very few legal markings on crossings, junctions, or much of what has been designed into this Promenade.

Bugger, was looking forward to going that way tomorrow, you won’t hear about accidents if it’s damage only, in theory it shouldn’t be possible to cause serious damage/injury at 20mph short of actually running someone over but people aren’t sticking to the speed limit, but what’s new.

That’s the point.  Slow down and use your grey matter.  That’s what the design is intended to make people do.

The issue is people who don’t slow down because they assume they have priority and other people should give way to them.  We call those people idiots.

Slow down.  Pay attention to others.  Never assume you have priority and be prepared to stop.  That way everyone keeps moving and everyone is safe.

The problem Is the initial suggestion to treat them as roundabout by Tim nice but dim.  The whole scheme should have always been pushed as a shared space where nobody has priority

The whole scheme is a complete shit show.

Actually it would work if it was either a roundabout or an unmarked junction it’s the combination of both that is the issue, either remove the markings or make it a roundabout not some sort of hybrid of both which leaves some people treating it as giveway to the right and others adopting some sort of merge in turn type system you’d expect from an unmarked junction.

Maybe it should be a filter in turn like they have in Jersey. Works pretty well keeping the traffic moving at a busy junction and also slows people down entering the junction too. It's also clearly marked as such.

The one at Broadway is going to be fun at TT at end of race or practice time. The crossing at the bottom of Broadway coming down from Victoria road etc that has the traffic lights on demand from pedestrians i'm sure is going to back the traffic up big time. Time will tell.

Just wait for the political embarrassment when halfway through Practice Week the whole of Douglas is totally log jammed due to the totally idiotic layout on the prom. And that’s without the horse trams. The whole traffic flow is going to be a total disaster.

Sorry but I use the prom every day. Even without the extra TT traffic its shit. The DOI have done a completely shit job on everything. Add a load of extra bikes and extra pedestrians down there and it’s just going to be even more shit. It already takes a good 15 mins on a bad day to get across it. It’s not going to take much extra traffic to demonstrate that what they’ve done is about 10 x worse than what we had to start with because of a bunch of deadbeat oxygen thieves at the DOI.
