Promenade - Megathread

Just been walking along promenade & most bike riders & motorists were being responsible & stopping at all crossings although 2 bike’s overtook a big van just before crossing & fortunately the people crossing had got across road!!
Also the usual dickhead cyclists riding down the pavement on promenade side of sunken gardens causing pedestrians to move aside, they got a fair amount of abuse but carried on anyway!!

But with the new Highway Code changes drivers should be giving way to pedestrians because they have priority, it doesn’t need to be a marked Zebra, that’s the whole idea behind these shared spaces/informal crossings.

the whole idea behind this is so that daydreaming earbud wearing tossers wandering along with their faces in their phones don't get run over .  move the  responsibility and liability away from the pedestrian onto the driver so they can get the blame in the event of someone getting skittled.

The seaward side of the prom is plenty wide enough for cyclists, what the hell is wrong with people??

It's weird.  Living in Amsterdam you get used to tourists walking, cyclists everywhere, trains, busses, trams cars - all together on the one space moving seamlessly among one another.

Put ten walkers two dog walkers and three cyclists on a huge wide open space in Douglas  and all hell breaks lose.  It's just us - we're all assholes.

Sadly, there are the few anti cyclists on this forum so when answering, you stoop to their level just to avoid the obligatory fallout...;)

Never give way to a cyclist on a pavement (that isn't a shared bike/walking path). If they hit you take them down with you. You also then have a claim if they injure you.

Good to see probably 1000 plus motorcycles parked up on the seaside of the  Douglas promenade , common sense seems to have prevailed at last , and someone in the DOI should have realised if the TT and MGP are going to flourish , then provision must be made for our most welcome visitors to park their machines ,and spend some money in the local economy , why not have a few signs saying   visiting motorcyclists welcome here ! instead of NO parking on the footpath !

I’ve been to lots of places. And I’ve never seen people being encouraged to kill themselves by walking out into busy traffic on a fake zebra crossing.

I do understand what you are saying. The 'fake' zebra is not a zebra at all though. Not sure what it is. The law doesn't change though, if you run a pedestrian down in it you are in the sh*t regardless.

In Spain pretty much every junction has zebra markings at every node. Often worn off to a greater or lesser degree. No silly zig zag markings or flashing beacons though, that seems to be mostly a UK thing.

I agree that if it's got white stripes it's a zebra and if not....it's not. Any other features are optional.

Like @Youaintseenme rightly says though, no one should every cross unless they see that the way is clear and that traffic has stopped. This is clearly stated in the highway code. So if you are silly enough to do that, whether it be a all singing all dancing zebra, a simple zebra or a 'fake' zebra then you put yourself in the same danger.

That doesn’t apply here yet as far as I am aware.
