Laxey flooding

the stinking enigma

Recommended Posts

It's been said 1000 times, not least on these boards. Basic maintenance and upkeep across the board on this Island long ago went out the window in favour of Fancy Dan job justification and ego boosting projects.

No glory in maintenance...no brass plaques with engraved names involved.

This is totally correct. No kudos  in fixing the absmal roads all around the Island which are getting worse by the day . But can find money for any scheme that ties up a few 'experts ' in DOI land . Has to be a project or its not worth bothering about . For gods sake will someone please get a grip of DOI and its leadership . We say it every week . I said on the eve of the last election the key to a successful new government about to be voted in was a strong and credible leader who would stand up to CS and chief Secretary . We got Quayle and millions wasted weekly .

Ray Harmer was given the poisoned chalice in DOI - most of the actual workforce were dispensed with some years ago in an attempt to cut costs with the department consisting mostly of managers who sub contract the work - however it seems either the day-to-day supervision of these is incompetent or the actual job specifications were incorrect otherwise how come simple tasks such as resurfacing the road from St Johns to the Hope required to be done twice, let alone jobs like Douglas Prom - too many such jobs seem to be mired in cockups for it to be purely accidental. Isn't this lack of knowledge within the dept one of the points highlighted in the Laxey report.

Same with dispensing the river gangs.

The DOI has been a poisoned chalice since the day it was created (hat tip to one A. Brown; tells you all you need to know. And the only remaining edifice from his reshuffle). A huge, unwieldy conglomerate of what were once small, effective departments. It's been a CS empire-builder's dream with a million opportunities and cubby holes to pass the buck and lose responsibilities with no accountability ever demanded.

No Minister has been able to rein it in or take any control since its creation; rather the Department seems to excel in leading its "leaders" by the nose, often led willingly, with those same Ministers then being stood up by the Department like stuffed scarecrows to take the flak and ire from the public and other politicians when the incompetence becomes obvious. It takes them in, plays with their egos then chews them up, spits them out and laughs at them.

Look at the promenade debacle. As a new DOI member, Baker had the opportunity to go in there like a stiff new brush and did he? Did he hell. He was immediately assimilated into the buck-passing culture and defended the imbeciles to the hilt.

The list goes on and on. Longworth/Buses. The Cabbage. The Sloc. The SMR. Richmond Hill.

At least Peel Rd got finished though, eventually. Hooray.

I think it was eventually signed off as compliant about 8 - 10 months ago? Though what it's expected lifespan will now be, Lord only knows

Everyone involved down there has been gagged by all accounts.

Yes i'd heard that too. Well a friend who used to work down there seems to think its not functioning as it was meant to be. If its true says it all about our government tbh ..

I believe that actually turned out to be a winner for the island, financially and operationally. It was a new system and the company installed it at a special rate in the expectation of spending time to get it operational, they then maintained the old system FOC until the new system was ironed out.

But is it working as it was meant to do now ? I believe its not as theres a triangular requirment and as thete is no more similar it cant happen . Happy to be proved wrong
