SugarBee
Ponies Make Their Annual Swim Wednesday, July 27, 2005 WBAL Radio and The Associated Press CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) - A big crowd is expected along the shoreline in Chincoteague, Virginia, today to cheer the wild ponies on their annual swim from Assateague Island. The ponies will cross a 200-yard channel to Chincoteague, where they will be auctioned tomorrow to raise money for the volunteer fire department, which cares for the ponies. Ponies that aren't sold, as well as those that are donated back to the fire department, will roam free for another year on the national wildlife refuge on Assateague. The pony swim was made famous by Marguerite Henry's 1947 novel "Misty of Chincoteague." Boats began anchoring near Chincoteague's Memorial Park before sunset last night, with many more expected to show up in the waters early today. Tens of thousands of spectators are expected to watch today's swim, followed about an hour later by the parade of ponies from the park to the site of tomorrow's auction. Virginia P
200 yards? Pfffftttt! Between the wars, the hardy Manx ponies were to be used to pull boat loads of Scottish holidaymakers between south Scotland and the Point of Ayre at the north of the Island. 18 miles each way. 200 yards?
