Jurby Prison

I personally can see this being another white elephant like nobles and the incinerator, sorry energy from waste plant, the Iris project is another cock up too the list goes on and on.

If the government made the criminals work instead of being sent to prison we would have less offending. Also ship all murderers to the UK prisons instead of giving them a easy life over here.

As for visiting it is down to the prisoners family to sort that out i don't see why the public should pay for a convicts family to visit him, after all there is buses to jurby so if aint that much of a problem.

I couldn't agree more - even though there will be plenty of people ready to raise the familiar bleats about 'human rights.'

If it happens to be an 'inconvenience' for their friends and family to visit them - so what? If they hadn't committed the crime those people wouldn't be suffering that 'inconvenience.'

Explain how a woman that doesn't drive and is living in Port St Mary with two young children gets to Jurby and back?

Lets say it's raining or even winter and it's snowing!

Sorry, Stav, but the convenience/inconvenience of the inmates' potential visitors shouldn't be a consideration in the planning of a prison.

If the prisoners and their friends/relatives don't like it, then the answer's simple - give up crime.

(Oh, God - am I starting to sound like Rog?)

When they talk about video conferencing there must be a cost for that i remmember watching something on the telly and it was working out at £3000 a hour for them to run is this true?

Perhaps they were renting the network and equipment.

Using the network reported here they wouldn't have that rental.

She should of thought of that before her kids/Husband done the crime.

If you cant do the time dont do the crime. A prison is not meant to be a holiday camp

On a Saturday, which I presume she would be travelling because obviously she's going to have to work to support her children whilst her erswhile husband is in prison, she could travel thus:

Depart PSM 06.40 Arrive Jurby West 10.03 Duration 3h 23 mins - changes 2

route plan

PSM Harbour 06.40 to Douglas, Lord Street 07.40

Douglas North Quay 08.10 to Ramsey Bus Station 09.09

Please Note this runs from Minorca Crossroads via Ballaragh to Dhoon Glen car park.

Ramsey Bus Station 09.40 to Jurby West (?) 10.03

There you go - she's there visiting her beloved.

Unfortunately she'll have to stay in Jurby West until Monday because there's no bus back direct. She could of course get a lift from Jurby West to Ramsey Bus Station with another visiting spouse and her problem would be solved.

Alternatively - she could just pack him in and give herself and her children a break!!!

Regardless of your sanctimonious answer, the point I was making was:

Have any provisions been made for relatives to be able to get to Jurby in order to visit prisoners and if so, what are the financial implications to the visitors or taxpayers?

Stav.

I'm not quite sure of the exact system on the island but I presume that it is based on the English system:

Help with the cost of prison visits

A visitor may be able to get help with the cost of travel to visit a close relative in prison through the Assisted Prison Visits Unit. The visitor must be on a low income (see below). A close relative means a wife, daughter, husband, son, mother, sister, father, brother or partner of the prisoner. This includes adoptive relatives but not parents-in-law, brothers-in-law or sisters-in-law. A partner is someone of the opposite sex who was living with the prisoner for four months or more before imprisonment or someone who has a child from the relationship. Claims from lesbian and gay partners are allowed.

A visitor can get help with the travel costs for an escort if the visitor is too ill or too young to travel alone.

What costs are covered

The visitor can claim help with the following:-

    * return travel by public transport or a fixed mileage rate for travel by private car. Taxi fares will only be allowed if there is no other means of getting to the prison, or if a taxi is needed on medical grounds

    * the cost of meals if the time away from home will be more than five hours

    * the cost of overnight accommodation if this is necessary for the visit

    * all costs of taking dependent children. If someone other than the parent is taking a prisoner’s child on a visit, s/he can apply for the same expenses as a parent would be entitled to

    * if the children have to be looked after at home while the visit is made, the costs of any childcare can be paid.

A visitor can obtain help through the scheme for a visit a soon as someone is imprisoned and can get help for a visit every 14 days. It may be possible to get help for extra visits if, for example, the prisoner is seriously ill.

Again, regardless of sanctimonious answer. You should be asking what provisions have been made for people to visit prisioners at Jurby. Like it or not, you will probably end up paying and if it hasn't been addressed, shouldn't it have been?

Rather than paying for taxis and overnight accomodation, perhaps they could think about providing a regular mini bus service?

Or

Maybe your "Give up crime" speech would do the trick and we wouldn't need a prison after all.

Simple solution...a prison ship.

It could move around the island.

Say monday for the PSM criminals

Tuesday for Douglas etc.

Seriously though how many inmates are there on average?

HANG ON YESSER, THE BOAT WOULD NEVER LEAVE THE SHORES OF ONCHAN.

I can see the news flash now

Prison Ship sinks in Onchan Harbour

In Tynwald they were discussing the new facilities in the new prison and by the sounds of it the prison has more leisure and community facilities than Jurby itself!

The video-conferencing was also discussed and it was explained it was needed because by travelling to court it had an adverse effect because it broke up the prisoner's routine and they'd also have to sit in the cramped cells at the court-house. Boo-fricking-hoo, who cares - they're prisoners!

I agree with the MHK Earnshaw, in his book a prison (and prisoners) are at the bottom of the hierarchy when it comes to spending tax-payers money.
