kevster
UK gauge train to Douglas via a bridge and/or tunnel. Transfer onto steam railway to Port Erin, then Irish gauge train via bridge and/or tunnel to Dublin. Easy

They’re at it in Jersey and Guernsey as well. https://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2019/07/17/jersey-guernsey-france-tunnel-proposed/ But they're actually starting the process to build one in Malta. There seems to be no idea so silly that somewhere won't try it if it involves giving lots of money to building firms. Meanwhile in London, Crossrail has been delayed again and is expected to be three years behind the date it was expected to be up to a few months before it was supposed to open. Big projects are so easy aren't they?
slinkydevil
I don't mind the cost or time it takes, as long as we can keep the horse trams running through the center of the tunnel. It could equate to a 150 more tourists every year!!

Big projects are so easy aren't they? Yes, but it’s only 5 km, and there’s an island in the middle. Max sea depth 26m. It’s 42km from Jersey to Guernsey. And the lowest point is 100m. The drop to 50m within 5km of the Guernsey shore. That’s quite steep.

Oh it's not as bonkers as the Channel Islands or Irish Sea suggestions. And the geology might be easier. But it's still fairly unnecessary and (like the CI) seems to be dreamt up because some people want a slightly easier commute.

No wonder they’re all so keen as every single politician seems to be more bent than Al Capone. IOM couldn't hold a candle to Malta, in that regard. These things aren’t necessarily about an easier commute. Sometimes, like, for instance, the Humber Bridge, they’re an attempt to join places politically, or for trade, or, like the Skye bridge, to make somewhere less remote and more integrated. Suspect the Malta example is the latter, dosed with contractor largesse.
wrighty
It’s more likely that Star Trek style matter transportation is invented before this tunnel is built. Particularly if the prom firm get the contract.

I'd be surprised if the Gozitans fall for that "project". From experience, out of season Gozo is relatively quiet compared to Malta and I rather think they'd prefer to keep it that way.
