Maybe the silt isn't quite as hazardous as first thought to be then...?

As ever it's worth looking at the full exchange between Crookall and Caine in Tynwald.  Crookall seems a bit clueless about the situation (or possibly suspects he's being constantly lied to).  He says the figures are available on the website, though the  most recent seem to be from March 2019.

What seems to be maybe a celtic house?  Nice spot for some contemplation....

With the limestone, that quarry should be watertight.  Doubt anything would leak from there into the sea.  Possibly a sensible spot for dumping toxic(ish) waste.

There's a Keeil, its just a little further up. That's a nice spot for sure.

Allegedly 3000 - 4000 tonnes of silt per year delivered into the marina too, on the published figures. At that rate over the years, you'd wonder how there's anything left between Peel and Foxdale.

Still, it will have been much reduced by stopping the kids riding their bikes around Rushen Mines.....

Good reminder. Now the offending fun-spoilers have been removed from office, could it be time to reverse that piece of small-minded nastiness?

To get back to topic, it's worth revisiting the figures for dredging etc from the FoI that started this thread.  This stated:

The total cost of dredging the silt and preparation of the Strategic Waste Landfill Site to accommodate the silt is £6,291,736.

{This broke down as] The project cost of the works to dredge and dewater the silt at Peel and transport it to Turkeylands is £3,981,736. The budget for the development of the Strategic Waste Landfill Facility at Turkeylands is £1,711,000, plus Peel Marina Project will contribute a further £599,000, bringing the total for the development to £2,310,000.

Against this annual income from the Marina was around £100,000 from Manx residents plus an extra £30,000 from visitors.  Of course there will be all sorts of other running costs to come off that as well.

An update (reference number 2175843; date submitted 06/01/22) has recently appeared on the FoI site that says:

"How much of the £6.9m budget approved by Tynwald has been spent on the dredging and removal of silt from Peel Marina since January 1 2019."

The total spend from the approved budget since January 2019 to 31st December 2021 is £2,971,790

So they've spent nearly half of it without really knowing what they are going to do.

But do they actually have to announce or even know what they're going to do? This could just be "another" open-ended employment vehicle for both public and private sector concerned (with the usual suspects doing very well, thank you)?

"We are where we are" (again).

So to sum up - @ 15 years ago we took it upon ourselves to create a marina by damming a local river (against local knowledge and advice) causing said marina to silt up due to the volume of silt carried into it by the river (does anybody else think that 3000 - 4000 tonnes per year is complete bollocks btw?). We've tried to apportion blame to other parties for this, including kids on motorbikes.

The costs of keeping this cleared will now exceed the marina revenue by millions of pounds per year, not only in dredging but in expensive solutions for storing/disposing of the silt.

But the silt may not now be as dangerous as was first mooted. It may actually be quite inert.

Somebody needs sacking if they can't find a permanent solution to this. In fact, they need sacking anyway. It's just a job creation exercise.

The only factor so far taken into account is the financial one. I would like to see data on marine traffic - i.e. how often these yachts leave harbour - as it seems to me that they each set sail about once every blue moon. So what would be the average cost to the taxpayer for each venture out onto the sea?

I suppose that is not relevant - it is just about some people with money wanting to tell other people with money that they have a yacht.

I think they should all sell their boats, buy a motor-home and park on Ramsey promenade every weekend.
