There'd be no shortage of volunteers. Many people pay to go and work on historic transport systems, especially steam (I see no reason why MER wouldn't generate the same enthusiasm). We could have the TT/Southern Hundred courses maintained by volunteers, judging by the enthusiasm for the races on here and elsewhere there should be no shortage of people willing to spend time maintaining the roads. Seriously though, you may be surprised how many paid staff there actually are on heritage railways in the UK. It can never work really here for several reasons, the main one being the Irish Sea. Volunteer/paid.... who cares as long as the operation washes it's face. Disagree about the Sea bit..... it's how the package is put together. It's a global thing (outside of CV, obviously). And yet, in real terms, adjusted for inflation, off peak, special, fares, are cheaper than at any time since 1978 when Manx Line was in competition. And pricing was cutthroat to gain/maintain market share, running at a loss, driving both to the brink of bankruptcy. And as a percentage of average wage they’re much less. We've got used to headline cheap budget airline fares. Which even now, by the time you’ve added seat selection and bags, are really quite expensive. Comparing like with like the steam packet and the airlines offer reasonably priced travel as long as you are flexible and don’t choose peak periods or last minute bookings. I’m about to start my frequent travel again. I’ve booked forward for more than 12 months. I’ve got some bargains flying to Liverpool and London and ferries to Heysham and Dublin. Now onward ferries from UK to Spain or IRL to Spain, that’s another matter.

There are too many hotels on the island, preventing the better ones from really thriving The island needs a wider range of accommodation offer, & - even post covid - the AirBnB market is thriving

Also anything with 'shared bathrooms' should be closed down with immediate effect.
