Its not a closure as as as I was aware just a "Drive Over" supervised by the plod?

No harm Derek, but if they are closing the road, the main route on the island from North to South, for a bunch of "classic cars" we need our bumps felt.

My business uses the mountain road multiple times a day as do many many others. To have that closed for an afternoon for something the "DoEnterprise" thinks brings in money is foolish.

Would the UK close the M6 for a parade of oldish cars?

ETA It also continues/ gives traction to the stupid "Unlimited speed limits" on the island that I know you are against.

Do we even get any revenue from these stunts to compensate for the cost of staffing the road closure, the public notices etc.? Or is it the unmeasurable "tourist dollar".

Maybe we ought to start charging a surcharge for the off-road bikes on the ferry to go towards the cost of repairs on the trails?

We do. It's called the extortionate ferry fees, which go into government coffers and get squandered when they should be spent on repairing the trails.

My business was predicated on removing the hoon from the public open road.

The chief constable report complained about a lack of police.  Escorting rich super car owners around the island is not an efficient use of resources. Neither is 3 officers hiding in a bush to catch a man with £10 of weed.

How does closing the road remove 'the hoon' from public roads?  It creates a culture of only rich people being allowed, with police and govt consent, to use the island as a race track.  Were local car enthusiasts invited?

We didn’t require any police resources. That was the whole idea. I’m presuming that the organizers of next weekends event are paying for the polIce escort at private cost rates. They’d certainly have been getting charged in my day.

Police consent isn’t required to close the road for such events- that power is invested in the DOI. And yes it was a HNW event, but what would you rather have? An open track event on the public road, or a properly controlled, insured and managed one where the user pays?

Depends ultimately on your overarching view of road safety I suppose.

I’d rather a well maintained road, that anyone can use, as long as they obey the rules of the road, and don’t cause inconvenience to other road users - parade laps causing tail backs etc. Whilst I do appreciate that these classic car enthusiasts getting an escorted VIP experience, are paying for the privilege, it is still depriving the taxpayer/ratepayer or citizen of overall police protection. The Chief Cuntstable witters on about recruitment difficulties and staff shortages, but when there is a tourist event or IOMG, all sense of realism goes out of the window. If the policing situation is bad now, and for example, as the Chief Cuntstable is forever banging on about Drug Overlords and debt collection along with drug mules and drugs coming through the post, how are they going to get a handle on things come TT2022?

You simply dont close main roads to allow such events.

The Sloc, roads like that are fine. I really have a problem with the main A roads being closed for fun.

I would rather that we didn't close the road so rich old men could blast around in sports cars, unless it's also an option for local people. It creates a two tier system. Who benefits?  The economic benefit is very little.

As for paying for the police, have actual criminals booked the day off? Gary Roberts claimed we would have turf wars during the pandemic as rival local gangs fought to gain valuable land to peddle their wares.  He's totally out of touch with reality.
