thesultanofsheight
I have to say I have no sympathy here. Maybe it’s time senior civil servants started doing what they were told to do by the people elected by the public to ensure things get done. Not complain about being bullied when they don’t want to do what they’re being asked to do. So what if Priti Patel was a bit rude, persistent, or aggressive? They are public servants employed very handsomely to do what the public expects them to do. She is the one with the mandate from the public not him. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/29/home-office-chief-sir-philip-rutnam-quits-over-priti-patel-bullying Trump often has the same approach. They aren’t there for themselves or their careers they’re there to do what they are required to do by the people who have been given a public mandate from the voters. A few more should take that on board as it’s clear politics is changing. Civil servants are only there to advise. If their advise isn’t needed or wanted as it cuts across what the public expects to happen tough shit. Suck it up.

Their Job Description includes acting with integrity plus Rutman is responsible for all the other staffers working for Patel. I suspect that resposibility is the cause of this. The court case should be highly amusing bearing in mind Rutman must have a massive pension ie he's fireproof.

When have any of them acted with integrity? The court case will be interesting. He’s claiming constructive dismissal because someone dared tell him what his job should actually be and what he needs to do in order to meet the democratic expectations of people who voted for his political master and her party. Yes his pension situation is saddening too in that he can afford to fight it out unlike most normal employees. But at the end of they day it’s tough shit a lot of these people really don’t know where they can get off they’re so drunk on their own self-importance. This is a refreshing shift. Manximus Aururaneus
My guess is that there will be a pay-off - but I would really like B.J. to pass this over to Cummings and go to court. It would be fantastic to see what the law says about the power of Civil Servants v Politicians and the electorate. Bring it on. (after the verdict, we can then start tackling the power of the courts).

What selfless act of heroism was this establishent stuffed shirt knighted for? The usual services to a massive salary and a feather bedded early pension? We certainly all know that cronyism is endemic at the highest levels in the public service. Hardly a shattering revelation. He turns up, he does whatever he does and gets amply rewarded for it through pay and pension. There are people in other walks of life working harder for far less, often in mortal danger, making a positive difference to the lives of others. They don't receive an automatic gong. I don't always agree with the sultan, but he has it spot on here. These people are indeed drunk with their own importance. Interesting times. It's not exactly going to be the trial of the century but it should generate some amusing alternative reality nonsense from the UK ridiculously rabid right wing press. Bit like here really....
