COVID-19 UK & Beyond

There is hope in spite of age. More depends on general condition. I see a 106 year old woman is among the recoverees. Some cases you know are beyond help though. You just give end of life care. If it was me, and I had other serious illness that was seeing me off in any case, I'd like to be given a touch of something potent to ease my passing rather than the prospect of gasping my last after a few weeks of struggle. For me it's about quality of life however long or short, not clinging desparately to the wreckage of a worn out body to eke out a few more days or weeks. Why would anyone?

Just because it may be impossible that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try.

Right now thousands of NHS workers are doing everything they possibly can to keep EVERY patient they have alive. Even though they know it's simply not possible.

When you go and tell them they're not living in the real world please make sure I'm there.

It's just something I wouldn't like to miss....

Hmmm...

Well I own and operate a number of Care Homes and have managed every one of them at some stage or other, I've just finished building a 7 bed specialist extension on one. My Daughter is a Director of Care having started as the Care Home cleaner. My wife is an NHS Consultant and has been for 20+ years . When would you like to pop round?

When you address a group of unbiased NHS workers of course.

This doctor and his colleagues sound about perfect to tell they're not living in the real world:

ETA: Good luck with that one...

You are the person who ran away and was then 'embarrassed' to wear £20 a pop PPE that you had prioritised for yourself  - You're not qualified to judge others, sorry.

This piss-poor response, saved for reasons of posterity, demonstrates the feebleness of your crass "real world" comment.

End of.

For comparison this is how our near neighbours handled it:

In March, while the UK delayed, Ireland acted. For many this may prove to have been the difference between life and death

Again, this only works if you are ready to suspend reality and believe that the whole show is run by Johnson, rather than by the government which is advised by the government scientific establishment. If they had been telling the government to change course, follow Ireland or wherever and they had refused, then I would agree with you. But they weren't. The politicians followed the advice of the expensively payrolled government scientists which is exactly what they would be expected to do. I'm not defending Johnson because he's my mate or I love his politics. I am doing so because your angle is manifestly wrong, unjust and politically self-serving. If Corbyn had won power, and some Tory supporting poster was attacking him for doing exactly what Johnson has done in following the advice, which Corbyn would certainly be doing, I would be saying precisely the same thing. You're not being realistic and you're not being fair.

As for Ireland, well, there are many differences between the countries. You don't need to delve too deeply. A so many per head infection/death comparison doesn't mean a great deal when you are comparing a country of tightly packed cities and towns to what is basically a massive peat bog surrounded by farmland with mountains around the edge and only one city that would even register on the UK scale. The profile of the populations too have a bearing. Large families of ethnic minorities live in small properties in England, far more than they do in Ireland. We also don't know what will happen in Ireland when they ease up. How's the herd immunity going over there?

For a much more balanced view on the comparison between the two countries, I reach for my trusty Grauniad yet again:
