Wilson closed more pits than Thatcher And very interesting it was as well: Quote Harold Wilson (Labour) closed 253 pits as against Margaret Thatcher (Conservative) 115, more than twice as many. However because there were fewer pits left it is without doubt that Yorkshire was decimated by Thatcher in the ratio of about 1 Labour closure to 10 Conservative. Edited March 6, 2020 by P.K. It was by cutting out dead wood and industries that churned out things that cost more to produce than could be sold for that played such an important part in saving our country from going over the edge. TheTeapot
The difference is that Thatcher weaponised the police against the miners. Edited March 6, 2020 by TheTeapot

The Prime Minister of the day has a duty of care to ALL of the people of the UK. Thatcher trashed that by working on her political dogma of "they don't vote tory so fuck 'em" and proceeded to decimate whole communities with total disregard for those left to suffer the consequences. Revolting woman. The real saviour of the UK was North Sea oil and gas.

She used the police to restore the rule of law in the face of rioting. It had come down to who would rule the country, the mob or the democratically elected government. Yes, all the people but that meant concentrating on the people who were abiding by the law and not ruining the country by their selfish stupid action being stirred up by the huge influence of the USSR on British unions that were playing their members for the gullible mugs that the majority were. The country was about to go over the edge even more so than Wilson had brought it to. Obviously communities reliant on lame and dead duck industries would be hit and hit hard but there really was no alternative. Income from. North Sea Gas served to soften the blow and underpin the emerging industries mostly based on new technology and easy in easy out employment. What was it in particular that bothered you about the EUSSR? Was it the secret police, the gulags, the censorship, the re-education camps, the food shortages, the isolationism, the cult of personality, the ban on private property, the threat of being institutionalised in an asylum for questioning the workings of the government, or something else you imagined?

Well I never considered the EU to be the or a EUSSR though it very obviously was decidedly communist in structure. Even that didn't particularly "grind my gears" in principle, it's just a political model that I want nothing to do with.

With an imagination like that you should be writing schoolgirl fiction. Thatcher decimated whole communities and will be forever hated for it and quite rightly. All that the Thatcher government did was to apply a financial tourniquet to stop the haemorrhaging of the nation's financial lifeblood that the inviable industries were reliant on. There was no alternative. Think of them as being necessary collateral damage from the utter mess unions had got the whole country into and that had to be sorted out. 1

Just try really really really hard to put your appallingly selfish right wing views to one side for a moment and think that on the receiving end of Thatcher's dreadful policies were real people. I know you're going to struggle with that, what with your age and everything, but it might give you some insights as to why Thatcher was such a divisive PM and is consequently hated and reviled for her heartless actions and quite rightly. Her stupid policies also caused the Falklands Conflict but that didn't stop her revelling in the "victory" despite the casualty list. Especially the tragedy that was the Belgrano which no 10 et al then all lied about...
