2112
Just now, Andy Onchan said: Yep.... that'll be next on the list. Sadly it’s like that at most UK hospitals. Also most UK hospitals are creative at revenue generating, eg shops and retail outlets. Perhaps Nobles could create extra space and rent it out to generate additional revenue? Initially our local hospital said it was to pay for the car park when it was built back in the 1990's. But strangely the charges still remain 25 years later. 2112
TBH as much as I wouldn’t want to pay, I might have to. The IOM is slow on the uptake and when things are free, there are many that take the piss - those who park in the hospital car park and get the bus, not forgetting those who park in awkward places making life difficult for general hospital users. It’s supposed to cover, and cover only, the cost of maintaining and repairing the car park, and the ticket machines and barriers, and any enforcement. And, as long as they don’t farm it out to one of the parking companies, it’s exempt from VAT ( recent Court of Appeal case ).

The John Radcliffe hospital says the fees are for 'patient and visitor services'. The car parks are run by the Trust and not as a commercial operation. All money raised goes directly back to patient and visitor services.

What's going on there then if it's VAT exempt?

What has Douglas City parking have to do with parking at the hospital for patients and visitors?. Douglas charge VAT because it’s commercial, and not for patient and visitor parking. It’s only the hospital parking that’s VAT exempt. HMRC have been fighting this through VAT Tribunals and Court for over a decade.

However there’s a cost to laying and marking out and maintaining, and then providing and maintaining the pay system and enforcing. I’m not sure they’ll raise much, if anything, above cost base.

I know VAT is charged on parking in Douglas. It's entirely possible it had been charged in error. It's like the Jaffa Cake VAT case, or there was a recent one about Poppadoms too. It’s in a thread of posts about the hospital introducing car parking charges in response to the roundhouse. In a response to a post about hospital parking charges, and how they’re dealt with in the UK, 2112 posted that charges were revenue raising opportunities for trusts, I pointed out why that wasn’t true. And added the VAT point to indicate that they’re 16.67% cheaper than for other purposes.
