Sadly it’s like that at most UK hospitals. Also most UK hospitals are creative at revenue generating, eg shops and retail outlets. Perhaps Nobles could create extra space and rent it out to generate additional revenue?

Where’s this extra space coming from at hospital? Renal teams & others are working in private patients wing as no room anywhere else.

There’s plenty of space for shops, kiosks, cafes, etc. you might have to be inventive, what there isn’t is the footfall to generate sufficient income to sustain anything much, for very long.

Look at the fuss there was about how much the hospital catering ran at a loss, then the god squad had a tenancy of the foyer cafe and shop, they didn’t renew.

Wonder how much Thie Bee, and the cafe in Mannanan Court, cost the tax payers nowadays. Especially if you factor in a notional rent, heat light & power, wages, raw ingredients, equipment. Mannanan Court does nice butties, cuppas, and cakes. Few hours a day. For 40 patients, visitors and staff. Last time I meandered past, on my way to a tribunal, there were three staff on duty at 09.30 and no customers.

Isn't the MC cafe run by the Friends of Ballamona charity?

Not according to their web site, The Ballamona Association for Mental Health lists its activities as:

Purchase and installation of an inpatient relaxation and calming room

Equipment such as specialist beds, chairs, therapeutic and entertainment equipment for residential areas

Mobile sensory units for therapy and relaxation

Funding for inpatient and community special activities and seasonal events

Daily newspapers for hospital wards

Garden equipment and water features in the hospital and community

Upkeep and care of the aviary in the grounds of Nobles Hospital

Beekeeping equipment at Brunswick Gardens

A fish tank and artwork project for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

Special equipment and household essentials for those in need but with limited funds

It will be interesting to watch the feedback from this one. Lots of the Douglas public meeting people seemed to think that they had just been shut down and then further shut down on social media. It looks like almost the whole meeting so far was Jessopp justifying Jessopp spending £10M on a facility that now has no purpose at all. If that doesn’t see him off as a politician nobody in Braddan that voted for then nothing will.

Believe their most credible commissioner John Quaye didn’t even turn up. So there can’t even be much support for Jessopp. Even from the commissioners.

So you obviously were not there, so why comment on facts you know nothing about

There’s livestreams and pictures posted elsewhere that allows folk to follow. Looks like the audience was limited due lack of to ease of access issues. Mr Quaye was clearly and categorically not there as the video footage proves.

I am a bit tired to give a full de brief as it went on for 2 3/4 hours.

John Quay was most definitely not there - they gave his apologies.

Andrew Jessop did not seem to grasp (care?) that they should have reconsidered or stopped once the project costings had started spiral.

He smirked repeatedly and this was commented on from the floor quite a bit.  He came across as rather arrogant and superior.

The business plan had been obtained via FOI and remained unchanged between planning (?) applications despite a price rise of £1M

He advised the cost to run the place for 12 months is £1M which includes interest of around £380k.  Income (when fully operational) will not cover anywhere near the cost to run - but AJ repeatedly said that this was ok as they were a not for profit organisation

The difference between income and expenditure and the fact the costs to run it weren't event being met were repeatedly pointed out, but fell on deaf ears.

It was confirmed that the 37% raise in rates related solely to the interest that was due on the loan.

The accounts for last year have not been signed off by the auditor - AJ stated this was due to a going concern issue.  There was much blame shifting regarding valuations and that no local estate agent was insured to value anything over £4m so they were having to find someone from across to do it.  He stated that they had only found out the auditor wouldn't sign off in the last couple of weeks.  He then confirmed that the accounts should have been filed by 31 October so were considerably late.  They have an extension till 2 April to submit - he didn't seem confident that this deadline would be met or have an answer as to what their plan was if they didn't.

Much talk about the building not being worth what it had cost, but this was the same with some flats they had built.............

See Palatine are introducing disc parking to stop misuse by hospital visitors & roundhouse users, maybe hospital should introduce similar policy

That should work given that they are normally well over 30 minutes late on their appointments
