It’s already set up & headed by Greehow & Magson with other government employees on it. I think Thomas asked back in January who was in it & what advice given, minutes etc.

Ashford took 2 months to admit no minutes & its stacked with insiders, Tynwald instructed external representative but as everyone has pointed out its a bit late!! By the time they appoint a mate it will be June

Magson for one is a waste of space, more able to closing down kids services in the UK than anything else.

A realistic figure would take into account a proportion of all the fixed costs. The analysis machines, staff costs, laboratory overheads.

I imagine the £50 only covers the consumables for a one off test.

Obviously I don't know the number but if i were guessing I reckon it will be more like £200 ish

This has been discussed at some length on here (most recently four pages back in this very thread) and Rachel Glover did a calculation in her coffee break one morning in February that came up with a rough figure of £10.50 for consumables and £8.25 for staff time.  The latter was probably an over-estimate as it was based on only 60 tests a day.

Of course you can pile as many overheads on that as you want, but you're not going to knock down part of the lab if there are no tests to be done are you?

I watched BBC CI news last night as I was interested in what is happening in Jersey. Most things have opened up and 2M distancing legislation has been replaced by a 1M advisory as they had last year.

Interestingly, their last community case was two weeks ago, on the same day as our rogue case.

Today, I have been out for shopping and other things, and noticed people preparing things in a couple of non essential shops, beer being delivered to 1886, and Robinsons delivering fresh goods to the Falcons nest.

I wonder if Thursday is Big Bang announcements day for opening up on Friday?

Has anyone got any idea how the practicalities are likely to shape out if people from here try to travel abroad (and return) via the UK?

The UK rules require people to be tested and to isolate, to varying degrees, on their return to the UK. But there is no through transit at UK airports for people travelling on to the IOM.

And how is the IOM going to know where someone arriving here has come from - whether only from the UK or from some red zone country via the UK?

Will people have to isolate and be tested on UK before returning here?

And deprive the islands hospitality industry another weekend of low/no trade, I doubt it. A Monday lifting of all legal restrictions except advice re. hand hygiene, masks etc is my guess. Hopefully the touted advisory group will have some younger self employed business people on it who understand the reality of life beyond salaries and pension, so we can avoid any future overly cautious, unnecessary and damaging baby steps when exiting future restrictions, should they be deemed necessary.

I am back in the isle; running in the glens and windy moorlands of its landscape. Not much else to do in my free time, thanks to… you know. The return journey was much less adventurous than the outbound odyssey of early January; an evening flight from Vienna to Heathrow (rescheduled two times), an overnight bus to Lancaster, a bus to Heysham, and the afternoon boat. – I had lost touch with this thread; and thus I skimmed a bit through the last few months to see what I have missed.

Here I have got some legal cookies for John Wright. And useful information for anyone who might be planning a journey to foreign lands in the current circumstances. UK government web pages (1st pic below) state that all international arrivals have to quarantine and pre-book two Covid tests to be released later. The BBC web-page (2nd pic) was much on the same tune. Realising that the UK locator form mainly reflects the rules of England and it is not mutually consistent with the rules of the devolved administrations and other jurisdictions of the British isles, I poured through the details of "The Health Protection (Coronavirus, International Travel) (England) Regulations" in force since last June as a "statutory instrument" (meaning that it was passed with no effective parliament supervision). The text of that "law" (wanting to dignify it with that epithet) is 94 pages long (some relevant excerpts are shown in 3rd and 4th pics below). My conclusion had been that as a transit traveller my UK locator form did not need to specify a UK quarantine address nor the pre-booking (and pre-payment) of the Covid tests.

Unfortunately, when my paperwork was checked at Heathrow, the woman police officer
going through it, after asking for passport, pre-travel Covid test etc, started going through my UK locator form (which I had on my laptop) much more carefully than I had expected and took the position that I still had to to take the two Covid tests: “every traveller to the UK needs them”. When the argument started, she said "show me the law" in a challenging tone and thus, imagine me holding in front of her face a laptop and scrolling down all of the above mentioned documents and legal stuff while trying to convince her.

Unable to either accept or refute my legal arguments and other justifications, she went first to fetch a colleague at a nearby desk and then a supervisor; the whole argument going on for about a quarter of an hour with the three of them. The supervisor said that the mentioned law was from last June; now superseded by the January instrument requiring the two Covid tests. No I said: the January instrument introduced the requirement of having two Covid tests for all inbound travellers quarantining in England; but it DID NOT abrogate the June legislation, which still stands. Finally, the three of them found a book of police internal guidance on these matters; after a bit of skimming through it, the same police woman started saying "I think he is right…" and her two colleagues nodded it through tacitly. The whole argument with them had not been animose or unpleasant. Before I departed, I had though what a nut I am for spending time on the details of the damn Covid legislation (which I hate and despise all of it). I am capable to prepare my recklessness; the fundamental difference between me and the jet-skier.

Now, to your regret perhaps, I decided to omit all the bit about my dealing with the authorities of this island on my returning here. My reporting of the January trip (cf. my posting to this thread on the 21st of January) had also to be sanitised after some reflection (it omits all the bits of when I had to cut trough the woods to cross an international border). But it was all worth; I had a truly fab month in the Swiss alps and my yearly reboot, like every other winter.

Well the Robinsons stuff will have gone off, even if they do open Friday.

I know someone who's just been on holiday to the Maldives. From Jersey.  When they returned to Heathrow there was some confusion initially as they didn't have a registered place to go so they were held up at immigration.

It was cleared up though and they were allowed to transit on to their Jersey flight

If by air then I'm sure airport security will have visibility to journeys, even foreign ones.

Only red zone has to quarantine in UK. Once borders open next month they will be able to check on passports if you have been abroad but assume this will only be checked if any doubt over information on your arrival form.

From what Howard said Monday we’re going to a testing scheme based on region you travel from ie copying Channel Islands

Friday?

No chance.   Schools are back Monday .

At the earliest the rest will open then.  Woudlnt surprise me though if there is some completely illogical decision made to keep people out of social settings for another week after that
