Not seen any shops ask for masks either. No social distancing to be seen anywhere and few fucks given. There’s crimbo shopping to be done after all. Also: bringing your own chair on the tube is next level. Respect. I can’t see people going for masks here either. The schools tried and virtually no one paid any attention. Time to get it off the news and just let us crack on.

Until scientists can do their lab magic, it's an unknown. The choices we have with that unknown are panic, take pragmatic steps to reduce spread if it is here, or wait until we find out if it's a problem. There's a gamble, and, the least invasive mitigations involve more testing, more masks, and asking people not to lick doorknobs. If it turns out that it's not a big deal, great, we can crack on. If it does, we've reduced the initial foothold. As an aside, GB News is often full of nonsense, so I wouldn't put any weight on their journalism. Every single media channel is often full of nonsense. I wouldn't put any weight on any journalism at the moment. Not sure why you think name checking the channel gives your point any extra gravitas. Banker
Masks for years 7 & above in UK , not sure what age that is as mine left 12 years ago The Department for Education has told schools in England that pupils in years 7 and above, and visitors, to wear face masks in communal areas. AcousticallyChallenged
This article is well worth a read. It's a nice summary of where we are, and the quote below decries the notion of it being time to panic. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2021/11/omicron-coronavirus-variant-what-we-know/620827/ Quote What’s known so far absolutely warrants attention—not panic. Viruses mutate; they always do. Not all variants of concern turn out to be, well, all that concerning; many end up being mere blips in the pandemic timeline. As Omicron knocks up against its viral competitors, it may struggle to gain a toehold; it could yet be quelled through a combination of vaccines and infection-prevention measures such as masks and distancing. Vaccine makers have already announced plans to test their shots’ effectiveness against the new variant—with data to emerge in the coming weeks—and explore new dosing strategies that might help tamp down its spread. Omicron might be set up for some success, but a lot of its future also depends on us.

Andy Onchan
There'll be many, many more cases popping up over the next few weeks. The SA GP in question operates a private clinic and so it's only her patients that are getting tested. There'll be many millions more who don't have access to private primary care walking around with this new variant.
