Perfectly healthy people die unexpected? Until the mechanisms are much better understood, it makes sense to keep most of the current restrictions in place. The problem is with those who seem to find it difficult to adjust to change. 1

Out of the blue
Scotty, I am interested, assuming that a vaccine does not materialize and there is no significant change in the prevalence of Covid for the foreseeable future, what would you propose, an indefinite travel ban? Some other course of action?

Everyone seems to think it has gone away because they can go for a pint. FFS

The risks are not too great at all and testing initiatives for new arrivals will have to take place at some stage. Guernsey is sensibly piloting that. Ignoring that we had a really low number of Covid infections and a low number of deaths outside of care homes so the impact was minimal. The NHS was not overstretched at any time. But now there are thousands of young, fit, active people now claiming benefits as the lockdown has taken their jobs from them and another wave of job losses about to start if this isn’t sorted. The pubs have nothing to do with it either. This virus is going to be around in a while we can’t just shut out the rest of the world for years until it goes away. FFS One month, six months, several years? I personally don’t have an issue over the summer months and then see what happens in early Autumn, but after that, we need to move on, however painful.

In real terms there isn't that much real risk at all. You can also reduce that risk even further individually if you want to.

NoTail
Quilp. The point of you argument exactly? This virus is not going away. For every x 000 a case will be positive. Once we open our borders, which we will have to do, cases will pop up here. We will need to be vigilant and have a good test and trace system with properly controlled isolation. quilp
What "argument"? That's my point. As you say, we need an effective test and tracing regime in place. Preparedness... Edited July 7, 2020 by quilp
Derek Flint
The lack of being able to travel is a pain. But on the flip side, I really like being able to wander around, not having to queue outside the supermarket, go for drinks and dinner and not have to be wearing a mask all the time. And wherever you travel to, that’s what you are faced with at the moment. That is manageable, but the question is how do we effectively test people on return, to help shorten their quarantine period, so we can maintain our ‘bubble’ effectively. And then, how do we modify that so we can effectively welcome visitors again? Solve all that then we will be the envy of the world.

As visitors (described in the Framework as ‘having no connection to the Isle of Man’) will not be admitted to the Island until the border controls have relaxed all the way to Level 1, I don’t think we’ll be welcoming them for a considerable time yet.
