Zarley
1 hour ago, madmanxpilot said: The answer to yesterday's cases: King William’s College can confirm that the cluster of positive Covid cases found on the island yesterday (Sunday) involves some of its international boarding students. A total of 26 students returned to the island on January 4th and have been quarantining in a bubble on the College site ever since. Seven of them tested positive following their test on day 13. The children are 16 and 17-year-olds who attend the College in order to study the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth Form and many of them have been at the school for many years. None of the students have shown any symptoms and they remain in good spirits. They continue to join their classmates in ‘virtual’ lessons using Microsoft Teams and, like the rest of the school, are busy following the normal timetable. The College is working closely with Public Health to manage the situation and to continue to ensure that there is no risk to the wider community. Have to wonder if any of them had been tested prior to day 13? If they had been tested prior, and tested negative, doesn't this situation lend credence to the theory regarding the new, more infectious variant taking longer to incubate and produce a positive result? If only we had the means on-island to quickly check for variants. 🤔 @madmanxpilotdo you have a link to your source? Thanks in advance. 😘

But then we seem to have handled it better than Iceland whichever way you look at it Genomic or no genomics. I would have thought that a place zillions of miles from anywhere could have done better than they have...I wouldn't be celebrating that's for sure
Newbie
5 minutes ago, Apple said: Can't argue with the scientists. Maybe someone will quote this tomorrow. I suspect that their answer will be that all positive results are sent to Liverpool for genetic analysis, and that they are a part of the UK system. Whilst that may be helpful at an international level to understand how the virus is evolving, it misses the point about the value of genome sequencing in understanding local outbreaks.....provided that the results are timely.

MickyBlue
KWC reduced the autumn half-term from two weeks to one, to allow another week to be tagged-on to the Christmas break - thus allowing boarders to have two weeks at home and then two weeks in isolation on their return. They were tested on their return - which identified a single case - and then have tested again recently. There are apparently members of staff isolating/living with them. It seems that they are therefore obeying all the rules and being cautious/sensible - which is why this cluster shouldn't represent a risk to anyone else. To be fair they can't win there. HQ and DA get a vaccine - they are jumping the queue and stealing Ethel's HQ and DA don't get a vaccine early doors- they should lead from the front and show us all how safe it is. As much as I disagree with lots of their nonsense I don't envy them their positions (especially since they have no relevant experience or knowledge)

What would we have done differently as a result of the results and what would the different outcome have been To date no one has answered this question Edited January 18, 2021 by Happier diner Typo

Thanks in advance. 😘 If they arrived on Island before 7/1 they’d have to do day1/2 and 13. To have tested positive on day 13 on 17/1 they must have arrived before 7/1. You can’t draw that conclusion. Its possible that one of them had it on arrival, but wasn’t shedding, tested negative and has passed it on to 6 others, but it’s equally possible that they all caught it at home or en route. As the whole cohort are now isolating for another 14 days it’s not relevant. Genomics would be interesting, but wouldn’t help.
